3. Why does CarMax offer a Matching Gifts Program?

CarMax believes that helping others is an important part of being a good neighbor. The Matching Gifts Program is just one of the ways we are working to give back to the communities in which we live and work. Through the CarMax Matching Gifts Program, The CarMax Foundation helps our Associates and their families make the most of their charitable gifts and volunteer work.

5. Who can participate?

CarMax Associates are eligible to participate after 30 days of employment. An Associate’s family members can also participate in the Matching Gifts Program. Eligible dependents that can contribute to non-profit organizations include:

  • Spouse / domestic partner
  • Children aged 26 and under, which include an Associate's
    • Biological child
    • Adopted child (or a child placed for adoption)
    • Stepchild
    • Foster child
    • The biological or adopted child/children of an Associate's domestic partner, provided the domestic partner is enrolled for coverage and the child/children are the tax dependent of the Associate for federal income tax purposes
    • Any other child for whom an Associate has legal guardianship or who, by court order, are dependents for purposes of providing health care coverage and who are the tax dependent of the Associate for federal income tax purposes

6. What types of monetary donations can be matched?

Cash, check, credit card, or stock/securities

7. What if an eligible family member writes the check or volunteers?

If you would like to have an eligible family member's contributions matched, you can submit their gift online or via paper form. Please type in the person’s name and his or her relationship to you in the "Purpose" space. If submitting contributions via paper form, please write your name and the family member who volunteered or donated funds on the "Name" line.

8. Are all gifts to eligible organizations matched?

Gifts that may not be matched include:

  • Gifts made by or through Community Trusts or similar organizations, including Charitable Remainder
  • Trusts, Donor Advised Funds, or Private Foundations
  • Gifts that provide a benefit, directly or indirectly, to the donor or the donor's family or friends
  • Any part of a gift that is not tax-deductible to the donor
  • Fees for service or tuition payments
  • Membership fees for which benefits are received
  • Dues to alumni groups or similar groups
  • Gifts or payments for political or religious purposes
  • Subscription fees for publications
  • Insurance premiums
  • Bequests or life income trust arrangements
  • Gifts of real or personal property
  • Cumulative gifts from several individuals reported as one contribution
9. How do I know which part of my donation is tax-deductible?

Your gift is tax-deductible if you didn't receive anything in return. The part of a charitable gift that covers any goods or services received in exchange for a donation is not tax-deductible. Examples of non tax-deductible donations include:

  • Tickets
  • Fundraising dinners
  • Golf tournaments
  • Promotional items
  • Subscriptions
  • Dues

11. How do I submit a request?

To submit a request for a Matching Gift, complete the online submission process:

  1. Make a donation to or volunteer for an eligible organization.
  2. Download the Matching Gifts form, review the guidelines, and complete the form, or submit the form electronically via EasyMatch.
  3. You will receive a confirmation email verifying the receipt of your form.
12. Where can I find the forms?

The Matching Gifts form is linked from the Matching Gifts page. By downloading the document, you will have the guidelines to review and the necessary forms to complete.

13. When will the organization receive the Matching Gifts from CarMax?

The Matching Gifts Program Administrator will verify your eligibility and your organization's eligibility. A contact will be made with the organization to verify the receipt of a gift in your name or documentation of your time. After eligibility has been verified, the Matching Gifts are paid quarterly.

14. Do I need to submit copies of cancelled checks or receipts as proof of my contribution?

No, the Matching Gifts Program Administrator verifies your contribution directly through the organization.

15. Will you tell me if my request is not approved?

Yes, you will be notified by email.

16. How much time do I have to request a Matching Gift once I've made a donation?

You have 12 months from the date you made the gift or volunteered.

17. Do I have to submit separate forms every time I make a donation?

Yes, a new form for each gift or donation ensures accuracy and satisfies audit regulators. However, you may combine hours volunteered into one donation.

18. Do I have to submit separate forms every time I volunteer?

Only if you volunteer for several organizations. Otherwise, you only need one form if you volunteer more than once for the same charity.

19. Why do I have to provide the exact date of my donation or service?

The Foundation cannot match gifts that are more than 12 months old. By providing an accurate date, we can ensure the eligibility of the gift, and you will help the non-profit verify the match.

20. Can I donate money or volunteer for organizations located outside the United States?

Organizations must be U.S.-based and recognized by the IRS, but may provide service internationally.

21. If I have a question about my contribution or the program, whom should I contact?
