Volunteerism

CarMax Associates aren't just employees, they're members of their communities. We believe that supporting our neighborhoods and communities is an important part of being a corporate citizen.

Our Volunteer Program provides opportunities for CarMax Associates to make a lasting impact on their communities. Associates participate in the Volunteer Program as part of a team-building activity, or individually.

Team-building activities

Through the CarMax Foundation, a store, regional, CAF, or Home Office manager can make a team-building event more rewarding. Not only does the team provide an important service to the community or organization, but the nonprofit organization is then eligible to receive a $500 grant from the CarMax Foundation.

Individual volunteers

If an individual CarMax Associate volunteers at least 10 hours with a charitable organization, the CarMax Foundation will match your time with a donation of $10 per hour.

How to get involved

For information on individual volunteer opportunities in your community, please register with the Hands On Network or VolunteerMatch. Create a profile, enter you ZIP code, and then search by areas of interest. Both organizations offer one-time volunteer opportunities, ideal for individuals looking to make a difference.

And don't forget, submit your volunteer hours to CarMax Matching Gifts, and the nonprofit can qualify for a donation on behalf of the CarMax Foundation.

The CarMax Foundation refers interested Associates to the Hands On Network and VolunteerMatch. So when your nonprofit organization is seeking CarMax volunteers, we request that you register as well to post opportunities.

Already benefited from CarMax volunteers?

If your nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization hosts a CarMax volunteer team builder, you may be eligible to receive a gift from the CarMax Foundation to match their donation of time.

Name: Rebecca Sckrabulis

Position at CarMax: Location General Manager at the Hillside CarMax store in Chicago

How long have you been with CarMax? 10 years

Why volunteer? I think the main reason I volunteer is because I can! I love being able to help, so I give where and when I can. It's like a big thank you to the community.

Programs you most often volunteer: Girls on the Run teaches young girls, aged 8-13, about self-esteem and leadership through organized sports. I also volunteer at the Chicago Marathon every year. The Chicago Biking Federation and area parks are important to me as well - anything to encourage safe family activities.

What is Regional Giving Chairperson? I am a member of a committee of appointed CarMax managers who look for localized ways to extend the assistance of the CarMax Foundation. I think I was chosen because of my previous [volunteer] efforts with CarMax and in my personal life.

How do you motivate others to volunteer? One of the keys to [successful team builders] is listening to our Associates. They are the foundation of everything that CarMax wants to accomplish. When your Associates are involved and feel appreciated, it's easy to motivate them.
