Does the thought of your daily commute leave you stressed before you’re even behind the wheel? Here are some tips to de-stress while driving.
Avoid Traffic – Getting caught in traffic is one of the major causes of stress on the road, but it doesn’t have to be. Phone apps like Waze and Inrix Traffic can warn you about traffic jams before you leave and suggest alternate routes.
Indulge in Aromatherapy – Scents such as lavender and peppermint have been shown to not only reduce stress but to increase alertness, an added benefit while driving. Don’t have an aromatherapy diffuser to plug in your car? Simply soak a tissue in scented oil of your choosing and place it on the dashboard.
Stretch Out the Stress – Stopped at a long red light? Release neck tension by slowly rolling your head around in wide circles. When you find a tense spot, hold your head there and take a few breaths while keeping your shoulders down.
Breathe Deeply – One of the simplest and most effective stress relievers is deep breathing. Take a deep breath in through your nose slowly, and then just as slowly breathe out through pursed lips as if you were whistling. Take your time with each breath. You may also want to download a deep breathing app such as Breathe2Relax to guide you.
Listen and Learn Instead – Make the most of your commute time instead of being frustrated by it and learn something new! There are hundreds of free podcasts you can explore and learn everything from a new language to physics to the latest inventions and scientific discoveries. Check out ‘Stuff You Missed in History Class’ and ‘Coffee Break Spanish’ for great examples.
