Hut, hut, hut! It’s that football time of year again. Friday nights belong to high school games. Saturday is college game day. And Sundays and Monday nights belong to the pros.
Whatever level your team is, a key element of the football fan experience is the tailgate. Tailgating is a distinctly American pastime, celebrated at football games across the country. It’s the ultimate combination of food, fun, and football bragging rights.
We’ve put together a list of simple reminders so you can spend less time setting up your tailgate, and more time playing cornhole and chowing down on your family’s famous 13-layer chip dip:
Don’t Go It Alone: Tailgating is a team effort just like its sport! Be sure to delegate jobs (grill cook, tent man) and supplies (potluck dishes, chairs) so you don’t miss out on the fun.
Become a Food Prep Master: The night before, shape and pack up burger patties between sheets of wax paper and place in sealed storage container so they are ready to grill. For cooler months, bring a variety of soups in coffee thermoses with lids. And, want to really impress? Bring bread bowls to serve chili in instead of messy paper plates.
Snag A Prime Spot: The early tailgater gets the pick of top spots, so pack your car the night before and be ready to roll in the morning. Give yourself plenty of time to set up, and make friends with your neighbors to combine space and fun.
Expect Game Day Surprises: Let’s face it, the weatherman can be wrong—keep extra mittens, umbrellas, and blankets on hand. While you're at it, pack an emergency kit with band-aids, burn cream, and fire extinguisher.
Keep the Cold Stuff Cold and the Hot Stuff Hot: Freeze water bottles and use instead of ice in coolers – you’ll have cold water to drink after they melt! Break out the crockpots (it’s that time of year, anyways) to keep things warm (or even hot if your vehicle has an outlet).
Don’t Forget About The After Party: Reserve some food for post-game to help keep the party going, and, just as importantly, avoid sitting in traffic.
Now you’re ready to go forth and enjoy this tailgating season! We’ll be rooting for you.
