Keep Your Cool This Summer

There’s nothing cool about the oppressive heat that collects inside your car after a long day in the sun. You’d swear it’s enough to melt your hands to your steering wheel. And your seat to your seat!

Employ the PHEW! principle for cooling out your car’s superheated interior.

  • Place all surfaces under wraps. Drape towels over your steering wheel and seats during the day to keep direct sunlight off them.
  • Help hot air hightail it. If you have a sunroof, open it an inch or two; hot air always rises. Crank your AC and/or fresh air ventilation to the max to dilute stifling air and help move it up and out.
  • Employ evaporation. Seal a damp washcloth in a plastic bag and keep it in the freezer at work; wipe down the steering wheel, shifter, and seats before getting in. Seat belt buckles too!
  • Work those doors. Open your passenger door or window, then swiftly and repeatedly open and close your driver’s door. Really work the door — like a fireplace bellows in reverse. It pulls the heat out!

These tips are in addition to the usual things you’d do when you leave your car in the sun (leave windows cracked, invest in a windshield reflector).

As well, now’s the perfect time to have your AC system checked out by your car care professional.
