In fact, we’ve shipped more than a million used cars for our customers since we opened for business.

Need a used car shipped? Here’s how it works:

  • Search thousands of used cars to find the car you want.
  • Contact your local CarMax or submit a transfer request form (found on the vehicle's information page). A knowledgeable sales consultant will answer any questions, lead you through our process, and collect any shipping fees (if applicable).
  • We'll take care of all the details, and professional car carriers transport your car safely and quickly to your local CarMax. Free local shipping takes an average of 3 days. Store-to-store shipping from farther away will take more time.
  • After your car arrives, your sales consultant will contact you to arrange a time to view and test-drive the car. If you decide to buy, the sales consultant will guide you through the purchase process (you are under no obligation to buy a car that you've shipped).

Q: How does store-to-store shipping work?


Call a sales consultant at your nearest store for details on the vehicle you are interested in having shipped. A sales consultant will be able to answer any questions about the vehicle; help arrange financing and/or trade-in; arrange for the vehicle to be shipped to your nearest store; and keep in contact with you throughout the process.

Q: Is the store-to-store shipping fee non-refundable?


The shipping fee is non-refundable. This is because the fee helps cover the cost of moving the vehicle from one location to another.

Q: Do I have to commit to purchasing the vehicle?


No. CarMax never obligates you to purchase the vehicle once it arrives, but the shipping fee is non-refundable. Contact a sales consultant prior to and during the shipping process with questions.

Q: What does the fee cover?


The fee covers the cost of the transportation. It is a separate cost that is not included in the vehicle’s price, and cannot be included in the financing of your vehicle.

Q: When do I have to pay for the store-to-store shipping?


All store-to-store shipping requires payment at the time the shipping is requested. Payments can be made by phone or by visiting the nearest store. We accept cash, credit (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express), or check. A sales consultant will assist with the payment arrangements.

Q: How long will it take to ship the vehicle? What factors determine the length of shipping time?


It will take between 1 and 28 days. Generally, shipping time depends on the distance between CarMax locations. The farther the stores are from one another, the longer the shipping takes. Once all vehicle inspections are complete, a sales consultant will notify you that it is ready to be test-driven.

Q: Are all vehicles available for store-to-store shipping? Why are some vehicles labeled non-transferable?


We can ship most used vehicles to your nearest store from another store. All our vehicles have their shipping availability listed on®. In some cases, a shipping fee may apply. Some states require possession of a complete and valid title before shipping can begin, thus making a vehicle non-transferable. Other states restrict transfers based on mileage or emissions.

We are unable to ship new vehicles or Toyota Certified Used Vehicles from our stores that sell new cars. However, unless otherwise noted, any vehicle appearing on® is available for sale at its current location.

Q: How long will you hold the vehicle for me?


Once it arrives the vehicle will be held for 72 hours. If you are unable to come in within 72 hours, please notify your sales consultant ahead of time to make other arrangements.
