Need a used car transfer? Here’s how it works:


  • Search thousands of used cars to find the car you want.
  • Contact your local CarMax or submit a transfer request form (found on the vehicle's information page). One of our knowledgeable sales associates will answer any questions you may have, lead you through our transfer process, and collect any transfer fees (if applicable).
  • We'll take care of all the details, and professional car carriers transport your car safely and quickly to your local CarMax. Free local transfers take an average of 3 days. Transfers from further away will take more time.
  • After your car arrives, your sales consultant will contact you to arrange a time to view and test-drive the car. If you decide to buy, the sales consultant will guide you through the purchase process (you are under no obligation to buy a car that you've transferred).

Q: How does the transfer process work?

A:

Call a sales consultant at your nearest store for details on the vehicle you are interested in transferring. A sales consultant will be able to answer any questions about the vehicle; help arrange financing and/or trade-in; arrange for the vehicle to be shipped to your nearest store; and keep in contact with you throughout the process.

Q: Is the transfer fee non-refundable?

A:

The transfer fee is non-refundable. This is because the fee helps cover the cost of moving the vehicle from one location to another.

Q: Do I have to commit to purchasing the vehicle?

A:

No. CarMax never obligates you to purchase the vehicle once it arrives, but the transfer fee is non-refundable. Contact a sales consultant prior to and during the transfer process with questions.

Q: What does the fee cover?

A:

The fee covers the cost of the transportation. It is a separate cost that is not included in the vehicle’s price, and cannot be included in the financing of your vehicle.

Q: When do I have to pay for the transfer?

A:

All transfers require payment at the time the transfer is requested. Payments can be made either by phone, or by visiting the nearest store. We accept cash, credit (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express) or check. A sales consultant will assist with the payment arrangements.

Q: How long will it take to ship the vehicle? What factors determine the length of shipping time?

A:

It will take between 1 and 28 days. Generally, shipping time depends on the distance between CarMax locations. The farther the stores are from one another, the longer the transfer takes. Once all vehicle inspections are complete, a sales consultant will notify you that it is ready to be test-driven.

Q: Are all vehicles transferable? Why are some vehicles non-transferable?

A:

We can transfer most used vehicles to your nearest store from another store. All our vehicles have their transferability listed on carmax.com®. In some cases, a transfer fee may apply. Some states require possession of a complete and valid title before a transfer can be made, thus making a vehicle non-transferable.

We are unable to transfer new vehicles. However, any vehicle appearing on carmax.com® is available for sale at its current location.

Q: How long will you hold the vehicle for me?

A:

Once it arrives the vehicle will be held for 72 hours. If you are unable to come in within 72 hours, please notify your sales consultant ahead of time to make other arrangements.
