Great car! Technology package rocks! Love the push button start/stop engine feature! Very minor annoyance is the "Unverified Area" prompt from the navigation system when you turn on certain streets. Haven't found a way to turn that off. Quality vehicle, dependable, and built to last.

2009 Acura TL Overview

The 2009 Acura TL made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show, the fourth and final generation of this mid-size luxury vehicle. The car's sporty and distinctive design plus luxurious interior are just the beginning of its perks: the 2009 Acura TL features a significant engine upgrade, as the 3.5L V6 replaced the older 3.2L V6. In addition, Acura offers this vehicle with a 3.7L V6, a powerful change from the third-generation TLs.

US News and World Report ranked the Acura TL #2 for 2009 Upscale Midsize Cars. It lost the #1 spot to the Lexus ES but beat out the Lexus IS. It also received distinction as a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) with above average results from crash tests.

2009 Acura TL History

The Acura TL originally launched in 1995, created for the North American mid-size luxury car market.

  • 1995 - 1999, irst generation: 2.5 SOHC -cylinder engine or the 3.2 SOHC V6 engine. Available in Japan as Honda Inspire or Saber.
  • 1999 - 2003, econd generation: 3.2 V6 VTEC engine. The model was based on the Honda Accord platform. A firmer suspension rolled out in 2002.
  • 2003 - 2008, hird generation: 3.2 V6 VTEC engine. ntroduced as new Concept TL at the New York International Auto Show with new body features.
  • 2008 - 2014, ourth generation: 3.5 V6 VTEC engine and the 3.7 V6 VTEC engine.

new all-wheel drive model available in 2009 with the SH-AWD system.

How It Drives

The 2009 Acura TL offers two powerful engine choices, each designed for performance. The base model's front drive 3.5 V6 has plenty of pep and easily pleases commuters, but doesn't have the cornering capabilities of other vehicles in its class. However, the SH-AWD 3.7 V6 with variable timed valves provides excellent acceleration and manages to maintain a smooth and steady ride even when revving at higher RPMs.

The new AWD system of the 2009 TL can be compared to the Audi A4 or even the BMW 3-Series when it comes to the essential balance of horsepower and agility. While the SH-AWD offers better handling when traveling winding roads at higher speeds, passengers may feel the ride a bit stiffer than the one experienced in the base TL.

Used 2009 Acura TL Value

The original MSRP on the 2009 Acura TL was $34,955 to $43,235. Today, drivers can find the base model (75,000+ miles), ranging in price from $13,000 to about $14,500. The Tech Package comes in slightly lower. The SH-AWD model used may fall around $15,500. The 2009 Acura TL holds its value nicely; its interior is still contemporary and luxurious. The models with Tech Package include an upgraded stereo and real-time traffic navigation, another plus.

Design & Performance

When Acura introduced the newly redesigned TL in 2009, it met with critique. This fourth-generation TL emerged with six additional inches in its body length and sporting the newest Acura front grille. The sportier and more aggressive look of the TL contrasted with previous generations, but did provide a bold facelift that got the attention of drivers who wanted a mid-sized sedan that effortlessly balanced style, luxury, and performance.

Fuel economy for the 2009 Acura TL:

  • 3.5L V6: EPA city/highway is 18/26
  • 3.7L V6: EPA city/highway is 17/25

Powertrain & Engine

Two engines are available for the TL sedan, each offering substantial power. The 2009 Acura TL is rated at zero to 60 mph in 6.1 to 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 150 mph. The 24-valve, 3.5L V6 VTEC engine offers 280 horsepower, while the 24-valve 3.7L V6 VTEC engine offers 305 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.

Only one transmission is offered, the five-speed automatic with a manual shift mode. The base level is front-wheel drive, while the SH-AWD is an upper-level option.

Body Style & Interior Comfort

The wheelbase of the 2009 Acura TL comes in at 109.3 inches, about two inches more than 2008 model. The fourth generation TL also is wider, taller, and heavier than previous generations. It's the first TL to feature the new front grille; large and definitely bold, it ties the TL in with the rest of the Acura family. The redesigned body panels have more contouring adding to the sporty look. Look for 17-inch alloy wheels on the base models and 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels on the SH-AWD.

Notable interior features include:

  • Leather seats (standard), power/heated front
  • Sport seats with contrast stitching in the SH-AWD
  • Power sunroof
  • Bluetooth, satellite radio, and USB port
  • A tech package including a navigation system with real-time traffic, advanced climate system, and upgraded stereo

The 2009 Acura TL offers drivers power, performance, and continued reliability in a mid-sized luxury sedan.
