Bought the car used. S-Line package, manual transmission. Fun car to drive. It's my new commuter car. I get 25 mpg commuting. Drove to VA over Thanksgiving and got 28+ mpg. This car will scoot. Handles great, and is fairly economical. The seat's a little narrow. And neither of the 12V outlets turns off when the car is turned off, which is odd. Still, I like it.
My 2007 Audi A3 (automatic, 2WD, cold weather package) has never disappointed me. It's a blast to drive. As a former Volkswagen GTI Turbo owner, I was looking for something understated but responsive. I find the Audi A3 very pleasant to look at, and fun to drive. The steering and brakes are smooth, but allow quick decision-making. Acceleration is powerful, allowing for ease with merging, passing, and thrill-seeking. At times the car feels like it almost leaps off the ground. Front and rear seats are comfortable. The quality of the leather seats is high, and seat warmers do the trick on cold mornings. My only complaints are 1) temperature controls, 2) seat belt alarms, 3) dash display 4) moon roof, and 5) performance in snow. The heating and cooling are determined by setting a temperature control, as opposed to directly turning on heat or cooling. The override options are somewhat confusing. I still can't figure out how to use the front and center air vents. An annoying dinging noise is heard repeatedly whenever the power is on and seatbelts are not latched. This is annoying all the time, but especially when sitting in a parking lot wanting free body movement. The dash displays, while very high-tech (allowing visualization of miles traveled, time since departure, miles to next gas fill-up, current MPG, average MPG for current trip, etc.) are a distracting shade of red. The double moon roof (with only a screen and the glass for closing) enhances a feeling of openness, but can easily cause excess heat in warmer weather Lastly, my 2WD model does not do well in snowy conditions, especially when traveling up hills. Overall, I love my Audi A3. It's very sporty and feels like a luxury car. I don't see many of them on the road, but I think it's just because people don't know the secrets of this car. I give it both thumbs up.
In my opinion this is the best inexpensive drivers car available. I drive it to work, and also take it to the occasional open racetrack days. It's a blast in either scenario. One of the few German cars recently produced that still comes with a manual transmission. This is the second A3 I've had, perhaps not the last. Also note, I prefer this generation of the car to the one Audi makes currently.
