Great all-arounder!

(I've only owned it for a little over a month now, so can't say much about reliability yet.) This is very much a driver's car. Performance is amazing for a big sedan. The engine in 535i is smooth and strong, with plenty of low-end and mid-range torque. The ride (with Sport Package) is firm but definitely comfortable enough for long trips. Cornering ability is terrific. At high speed (90+mph) you get that German solidity and stability. Steering is a little heavy but perfect for me. Gear changes are smooth in normal mode and pleasantly quick in sport mode. Even with all of the above, this car relaxes when you want it to be. It can cruise at any speed with comfort. The sport seats are supportive and firm. Features are aplenty. A comfortable driving position is easy to find due to the 20-way adjustable seats. Now I just hope it's a good value for money and doesn't break down too often in the future.

2008 535xit wagon

I finally sold my 2003 525iat wagon, rear wheel drive, sport package... This is a fine machine with a tremendous amount of power that never lets you down. Switching from rear wheel drive to all wheel drive takes some getting used to...the torque this vehicle has is real and felt. I think it may be a little slower out of the gate than the rear wheel drives, but only from a dead stop. And it makes up for it at all other intervals. The vehicle is smart. Everythign you would think the manufacturer should have doen, they did. Its beautiful, refined and muscular. Idrive system takes some getting used to as well, but everything it is capabel of doing, it does well. My vehicle has sport package and its worth it for the sport seats that move in every imaginable direction.

Be careful

The 2008 5 series BMW is a remarkable vehicle and worth the tilte of "The Ultimate Driving Machine", but there is alot of things going on with this car that must be monitored closely. It is always a good idea to buy the extended warranty on any car, but especially this one. The many systems and comfort features that make the car what it is, can fail and in turn make other systems fail. The on-board computer does a good job of keeping you informed of maintenance schedules and system failures, but if you truly want to drive a used 5 series BMW, comfortably and with peace of mind, it is essential that maintenance be done regularly and proactively. Do not cut corners on maintenance and do not allow anyone other than qualified BMW technicians to troubleshoot your car. BMW's can last well into the 3-400,000 and more mile range and the car truly is a joy to drive, but you get out of it what you put in. I would reccomend this car to anyone who can afford to maintain it, it is a very choice vehicle and I am positive I made the right choice.
