As a full-sized luxury car, the Buick Lucerne fits the bill. I bought mine just under two months ago; I have the base model, but it is more than enough car for me. There may not be all the gadjets and gizmos of the CXL, but I'm happy. There are rumors about the 3800 being "under powered." Well, I haven't had any problems with mine. In fact, my sister says it "flies like a rocket" when I ride with her on the interstate. My girlfriend likes to curl up cozy in the seat and shut her eyes and just ride.
I got the column shifter -- now a thing of the past, in case you didn't know. So with no center console the car is even roomier -- with a sixth seat if necessary. Gas mileage is about 18 city, 25 highway. not great, but not bad. About what is to be expected from a big sedan. Just keep your foot out of it and you'll be fine.
The driver information center is a nice feature, with relevant information at the push of a button. And all the controls are right within reach inspite of the large size of the passenger compartment. There is plenty of head and leg room both front and rear. And the smooth ride makes everyone feel comfortable. The sound system is top flight and you can hear conversation from passengers even with the music at a nice audible volume. The cabin is very quiet without feeling sealed up. And the HVAC is wonderful and quick to fill the cabin with comfort.
As with all newer cars, it seems the rear end is a little hard to "find" looking through the mirrors. I find myself having more space behind the car than I think I do when parking. Better more than less I suppose. Speaking of thr rear end: the trunk is nice and large with plenty of deminsion.
If I were to list any faults, I would say brake feel is a little squishy at first. But I got the feel for them in a matter of a couple weeks. The car I had before this was more sporty with firmer breaks. Also, there is what I call the GM lag: when you mash the accelator there is a pause, as if the computer has to think about it before giving the fuel pump the go-ahead to feed the injectors. It seems many GM engines do this.
The Lucerne is built on the Cadillac DTS platform (or vice-versa, if you prefer). With front wheel drive and the spacious cabin it is truly a road car. I've taken a couple of freeway jaunts since owning mine. It is certainly a car I plan to keep for a good many years. And since it was discontinued with the 2011 model year, if you want one you better act fast.
