Vehicle as a Whole

2006 Chevrolet Cobalt slenderone - Homewod, IL 12/02/2009

I love my chevy cobalt. She has a lot of get up and go. She is also a wonderful replacemet for the cavalier. The rear of the vehicle can come down a little bit, but overall, the vehicle is great.

very nice car

2010 Chevrolet Cobalt greenbean - Louisville, KY 02/25/2012

I just bought this brand new red 2010 chevrolet cobalt. I traded in my '95 mustang convertible that was fallin apart and almost undriveable, to this very nice, affordable cobalt. It drives very smooth and has great heat. It also has great gas mileage..24 mpg. This car is great for gettin me to work and school and i just love it. It's small and spunky just like me!

Awesome Car

2006 Chevrolet Cobalt A - Texas 07/12/2008

Chevorlet has made a wonderful economical car especially in these times of rising gas prices. Very affordable, sporty, sedan has lots of room in back and trunk area. Already have one for my son who is college. I'm now getting another one for my other son who has just graduated from high school. I would recommend this to any one who is looking for a sporty car thats great on gas.

Chevrolet Cobalt Overview

The Chevrolet Cobalt is extremely economical and fits the bill of a practical car with the bare-minimum requirements, but no unnecessary features. All versions of the Cobalt excel in fuel efficiency, which makes them great commuter vehicles.

Chevrolet Cobalt History

  • The Chevrolet Cobalt was introduced for the 2005 model year. It succeeded the Chevrolet Cavalier.
  • In 2008, Chevrolet released a Cobalt with a special edition package. It featured all the luxuries available on its higher trim level, minus its turbocharged 2.0 engine. This version was only available for 90 days, making it difficult to find used due to low overall supply.
  • Chevrolet ended production of Cobalt vehicles in late 2010.
  • The Chevrolet Cobalt's successor is the Chevrolet Cruze.

How It Drives

The Chevrolet Cobalt is best for anyone who just wants to get from Point A to Point B in a basic car. The ride and handling are a little rough when turning tight corners; however, the suspension can operate smoothly on long stretches of highway. While the front of the cabin is certainly roomy enough for the average person, you may run into discomfort if you are 6-feet or taller. Additionally, the dashboard gauges may be difficult to read because of their small size and print.

Used Chevrolet Cobalt Value

The Chevrolet Cobalt has a long recall history. It initially received recalls in 2007 for 2005-06 models because the cars did not meet federal safety requirements. In early 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million compact cars due to power steering problems, which included the Cobalt. Even after production ended later that year, GM again recalled Cobalt models in 2014 for defective ignition switches.

Needless to say, this vehicle lost a bit of its edge in the compact car market as a result of these recalls. The maintenance costs can also be of concern, though the vehicle is extremely affordable now. It's rather average in terms of performance and fuel efficiency; a Toyota Corolla or a Nissan Sentra would fulfill the same commuter role as the Cobalt with less worry.

Design & Performance

During its short production period, the Chevrolet Cobalt received a few cosmetic upgrades. Otherwise, it stayed largely the same.

  • The Cobalt's base trim level is also referred to as the Cobalt XFE (standing for extra fuel economy). Notably, it doesn't have certain options modern car buyers expect, like air conditioning.
  • The next trim level above the XFE is the LS, which has features that are more in line with today's standard, like air conditioning and XM radio.
  • The Chevrolet Cobalt Super Sport (SS) is available as the vehicle's high performance trim level.
  • In 2006, a non-supercharged Cobalt SS was added as an option. It has a 2.4L four-cylinder engine.
  • The Chevrolet Cobalt has many distinct colors, including: black, gray, dark blue, red, and yellow.

Powertrain & Engine

The front-wheel drive compact car has two engine options. Both are fuel efficient, though the SS trim level definitely receives the stronger engine.

  • The Cobalt XFE's 2.2L four-cylinder engine is extremely fuel efficient; it gets 24 mpg in the city and 37 on the highway. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
  • The Cobalt LS shares engines smissions with the Cobalt XFE
  • The sportier Cobalt SS model has higher performance goals. It is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine that gets similar mileage to the base engine, while vastly improving the horsepower.

Body Style & Interior Comfort

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a simple car with slim customization options.

  • The Chevrolet Cobalt is quite small, but can comfortably seat two adults.
  • The Cobalt is available with two body styles: a coupe and a sedan.
  • Inside, the Cobalt XFE does not include features that many consumers and carmakers consider standard, like air conditioning or power accessories. If you are seeking more interior comforts with your compact car, seek a higher trim like the Cobalt SS.
