2014 Chevrolet Impala Overview

With production dating back to 1957, the Chevrolet Impala has been one of today's best-selling midsized sedans. Interestingly enough, the Impala itself did not start off as a midsized sedan. It wasn't until the 2000 release that this version became available. For the 2014 Impala release though, the vehicle falls into the category of a full-size car, and into the tenth generation of production with a complete redesign.

2014 Chevrolet Impala History

After many people expressed some disappointment in the 2013 Impala release, which saw little in the way of changes and upgrades, Chevrolet wowed its audience with a total redesign of the flagship vehicle for 2014. This year's release sees a number of impressive and noteworthy upgrades, including:

  • Brand new interior and exterior design
  • Active noise cancellation
  • Full speed-range adaptive cruise control
  • Longer and lower profile design

The 2014 Impala also sees the introduction of innovative features, including a lane-departure warning system, crash-imminent braking, and forward-collision warning. Available in three trim levels (base LS, LT, and LTZ), this vehicle can be customized to suit any driver's needs.

How It Drives

Where the 2014 Chevrolet Impala really shines in its performance is on the highway; its revamped engine has no trouble keeping up with the flow of traffic and accelerating effortlessly onto freeway on-ramps. Its new active noise cancellation system also proves to be a star, providing a quiet and comfortable ride even on freeways and bumpy roads. Furthermore, where the 2013 Impala's performance seemed to suffer (handling and braking), the 2014 release does an excellent job maneuvering even the tightest of curves and winding roads. Plus, drivers who opt for the V6 will enjoy added power that does not go unnoticed. Overall, the behind-the-wheel experience offers a significant upgrade compared to past releases of the Impala.

Used 2014 Chevrolet Impala Value

With its redesign, the 2014 Chevrolet Impala saw a jump in price, with a new MSRP starting at just under $30,000 and going up to $40,000, depending on packages and trim levels chosen. However, compared with two of its biggest competitors (the Dodge Charger and the Ford Taurus), this price is still quite low for the features included. Furthermore, the 2014 Chevrolet Impala seems to retain its value well and provides long-lasting dependability. Plus, when repairs and part replacements do become necessary, drivers can rest assured that Chevy parts are easy (and relatively inexpensive) to come by, making the overall ownership costs of this vehicle low. When looked at side-by-side with competitors like the Taurus, Toyota Avalon, and Kia Cadenza, the 2014 Chevrolet Impala provides an excellent value.

Design & Performance

It's not a secret that previous releases of the Chevrolet Impala were lackluster in terms of their design and performance. With the 2014 Impala, however, Chevy appears to have turned a new leaf. With powerful acceleration, precise steering and handling, and a surprisingly smooth ride, the performance ranks up there with even some of the higher-end full-size vehicles out there. This year also saw the release of the Impala Eco model, which allows for up to 29 mpg combined (25 city and 35 highway) in fuel economy. Even those who don't opt for the Eco model will enjoy better-than-average fuel economy at the pump.

In addition to excellent fuel economy and overall performance, the 2014 Chevrolet Impala also affords:

  • Three engine options to choose from
  • Six-speed automatic transmission standard
  • Front-wheel drive standard

Powertrain & Engine

The standard engine on the 2014 Chevrolet Impala is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder at 195 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque. Some were surprised by this, especially considering the 2013 release came standard with a V6. Still, a 3.6-liter V6 does come standard on all trim levels except the base LS. This engine affords 305 horsepower and 264 lb-ft of torque. And then there is the Impala Eco, which is essentially a "diet" version of a hybrid car and offers a 2.4-liter engine combined with a tiny 15-horsepower electric motor to help save fuel. While not a true hybrid, this is a great option for those who are conscious of their carbon footprint (and fuel costs).

Body Style & Interior Comfort

The interior and exterior design of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala showed a great transformation compared to previous model years, with a completely revamped dashboard and console that is sleek and sophisticated. Drivers also enjoy the longer wheelbase that allows for more leg room (another area where previous model years lacked). Additional interior features and specifications include:

  • 18.8 cubic feet of trunk space
  • Five-person seating capacity
  • MyLink touchscreen interface in LT and LTZ models
  • Power-adjustable driver seat

In addition to added front- and back-seat leg room, drivers will also enjoy the sleek new design and more dramatic look that finally bring the Impala into this decade.
