Reviews for 2008 Honda Odyssey
Honda Beats Toyota
I just traded in a Toyota Sienna for the Honda Odyssey. I would recommend the Honda over the Toyota except for the transmission - the new VSA system on the Honda is weird. You constantly feel the engine drop from 6 cylinders to 4 and back to 6. This is a fuel efficiency feature but it is quite annoying. You constantly feel like the transmission is slipping. You can turn the feature off but it automatically comes on every time you start the engine. We always turn it off unless we are driving on a freeway. If you turn it off, a big triangle warning light stays lit on the instrument panel. Other than this quirky feature, the Honda outperforms the Toyota -steering is way better than Toyota and it just feels like a much more solid vehicle. A bit too many childproof features I think but you can get around those.
I reviewed the van on Edmunds.com prior to making the purchase who chose the Honda Odyssey as their first pick for minivans that year. We had always wanted the Odyssey but when they came out, the dealers were charging (and people were paying) more than the MSRP which was over our budget at the time. I am really happy to finally have one! So the van has the bells and whistles that make driving and using a van fun! With the two rows in the back, I can separate my kids which has cut the bickering between them. My 13 yr old tall boy is super comfortable in the captains chairs in the second row. There is more room than we technically need so we can all stretch out. I chose the van because I need a new hip and it is SO comfortable to drive! When coasting, the van's engine actually moves to and ECO mode that changes the workings from 6 cylinder to three, improving gas mileage. It handles really well. When I test drove the next best van, it felt like a boat! But the Odyssey feels as controllable as a small car. Finally, with the six cylinders, I am not the last pulling away from a light. I highly recommend the Odyssey for those with minivan needs. It looks sleek and handles great and fits anything you need to carry around.
A great car for a family
Yes, this is a minivan... you have to embrace it, accept it, and move on. Once you come to grips with the fact you are driving a mom-mobile you can appreciate the space and layout of this versatile and functional car. The car comfortably seats 7, has ample storage compartments and cupholders (13 of them... apparently we all need to twin fist our beverages these days) and drives beautifully. Plenty of horsepower, quick response on the acceleration, and able to hold steady on the open road. Visbility is decent. There are a couple of "iffy" spots in the back of the car, but if you aren't one of those people with poor depth perception and handling skills you will do just fine. This car is great on road trips as well as a daily driver. Dashboard display is clean and clear, easy to follow. The gas door latch is a little difficult to reach if you aren't limber. Rear seats fold flat into a recessed trunk space. This car works perfectly for my family. I have a 7 year old and 2 year old twin girls. I would definitely recommend this car for anyone with multiple children who desires a safe, strong, and functional car for their family.
