This is my 2nd, and last, Land Rover purchase I will ever make. In only 4 years of ownership I have repair invoices totaling over $20,000! (luckily under extended warranty). I did not believe the ratings of Land Rover vehicles issued by JD Power and Consumer Reports, but believe them now. Since the year 2000, JD Power has ranked Land Rover vehicles as the LEAST reliable of ALL auto manufacturers. I have had an engine replaced, every type of engine seal/transmission seal replaced two times. Window regulators replaced 5 times, and the list goes on... Bottom line, Land Rover prides itself on exceptional marketing, and beautifully designed vehicles, what the auto press does not cover in great detail is that ownership costs for maintaining the vehicles will be incredibly expensive and mechanical/electrical failures will be a constant problem. Don't buy Land Rover, you WILL regret it.
This is the second Land Rover Discovery (or "Disco") that I've owned. The first one was a '99 model, the 2004 model is a great improvement. This vehicle can do some amazing things offroad and yet handle the roads very nicely, safely and comfortably. The 2004 model has center lock differential and traction control which allows you to handle some really tough offroad situations. From a safety standpoint, the 2004 Discovery is the last Land Rover model sold in the US that has a true frame. The third row is a great option that allows you to transport 7 people comfortably. With the middle seats and the third row folded, you have a huge cargo area and, because of the height, you can even fit a full size assembled mountain bike. It already comes with a hitch receiver, you just need to add the wiring and the hitch. I highly recommend the rear air-conditioner and dual sun-roofs options. It seems that Land Rover has addressed some of the mechanical issues of prior years' models, I've had no issues other than the scheduled maintenance. If you want a vehicle that can take you both to a cocktail party and also to the middle of the jungle, then the Discovery is your car.
