Performance and MPG in a Hybrid
2006 Lexus RX 400hElectric SUV - Highland Park, IL11/20/2006
I was hesitant in purchasing a hybrid, especially a "luxury" SUV...I have been pleasantly surprised. To date I have averaged roughly 29mpg and the performance (250+ HP) has been more than adequate. As a comparison, I had replaced a full size SUV which averaged 12 miles per gallon and was in the 200HP range.
The areas which could be improved, would be rear seat leg room and the transition "feel" between gas and electric motors. Additionally, the DVD navigation unit, which is voice enabled can create a great deal of frustration as you get it to respond to your verbal commands.
A hybrid takes a while to get used to, especially when the engine transitions between gas and electric. There have been numerous times when I thought the vehicle had stalled while I was idling. After some getting used to, I am now oblivious to the transition to economy mode.
As a first time hybrid owner, I'm now convinced the technology is a viable alternative for future purchases.
