I traded my BMW X5 diesel for the M diesel. I really love the M and have wanted one for a long time. Since they are direct competitors its interesting to drive both and compare. The M is more luxurious and comfortable in the seats and cabin. I like both the M and X5 exterior and they are similar. Where the X5 shined is in its speed. It is a lot faster than the M and took off when driven. That being said I still prefer the M.
So far, my SUV has been amazing. I've had it for over a year. I bought it used, 2006, and I've done nothing but routine maintenance. The ride takes a little getting used to, but I used to drive a BMW 325i, so I wasn't expecting the kind of performance from that kind of car. I read such horrible things about this automobile after I bought it, that I kind of freaked out about my rash purchase. No trouble, whatsoever. Great car.
This is an outstanding car. Drives smooth, feels good, handles well, very quiet inside, have very good acceleration (I have a diesel version). It also has a lot of cool features, such heated seats, joystick regulated steering column, memory seats, the best navigation I ever have had, collision warning, folded back seats, driving assistance, just to name a few...
