FAQ

Q: What does S-Class mean in Mercedes?

A: S-Class is shortened from the German Sonderklasse, or Special Class. It represents the sophisticated manufacturer's top of the line choice in automobiles, providing exceptional luxury, comfort and performance across a wide range of markets. It is Mercedes-Benz flagship automobile, providing the very best the German manufacturer has to offer its customers.

Q: Does the Mercedes S-Class offer a convertible?

A: Yes, the Mercedes S 560 Cabriolet is a stylish, two-door convertible that still provides an aerodynamic ride for superior handling, performance and comfort. It's designed to retract the roof in 20 seconds even as you accelerate the vehicle up to 30 MPH. This model is available in the sixth generation of the Mercedes S-Class automobiles, produced in and after 2014.

Q: Does the Mercedes S-Class offer a hybrid?

A: Starting with the 2019 model year, the Mercedes S 560e will be available, which is a plug-in hybrid. Prior models of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class that included plug-in hybrid capabilities include the S 550 e and the S 400 Hybrid.

Q: How many people does the S-Class seat?

A: With a convenient center console, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class comfortably seats two adults in the front bucket seats and up to three people in the back seat, with a drop-down armrest and console in the middle seat that can be used if it remains unoccupied. Unlike many other manufacturers, Mercedes extends the comfort of heated and ventilated seats to the back seat, allowing everyone to ride in comfort.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Models

Fifth Generation (2006-2014):

Introduced at the Frankfurt International Auto Show in 2005, the fifth generation of the S-Class saw a larger overall size compared to prior generations. Three newly-developed engines provided an increase in power of up to 26% compared to past options while the interior received a complete update with upgraded materials for a more luxurious experience. The gear lever was moved from the center console to the steering column, while new technology provided night-vision assistance in the Infrared Night View Assist™ feature and an update to the manufacturer's proprietary pre-collision system. The fifth-generation models sold in North America include the S 450, S 400 Hybrid, S 350 Bluetec, S 550, S 600, S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG.

Sixth Generation (2014-Present):

Introduced to the world in 2013, the sixth generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class provided a complete facelift, with a much more streamlined appearance than past model years. It was the first vehicle to introduce the use of LED lighting inside and out exclusively in the industry.

This generation also spread its wings from its sedan-only focus to include coupe and cabriolet options, possibly to appeal to an aging Baby Boomer population. The improvement of Mercedes-Benz Active Body Control™ suspension system to include Magic Body Control™ integrates the use of a windshield-mounted stereo camera system to provide new Road Surface Scan™ options that interface automatically with the car's computer, adjusting its suspension for rougher roads and delivering a much smoother ride. For an even more luxurious ride, the available ENERGIZING Comfort™ system delivers customized sound, scent, climate control and seat features such as massaging seats. The sixth-generation models sold in North America include the S 450 (sedan only), S 560, AMG S 63 (sedan only) and AMG S 65 (sedan only).
