This is a very satisfying SUV except for the typical-of-the-class issue of less-than-great gas mileage (15-19, city-Hwy). I previously had a 1999 Eddie Bauer Explorer that also had V8 with fulltime AWD. I love the power and FTAWD but the suspension on this Mountaneer is so much more comfortable than that of the explorer. Yeah, it still feels like a truck but it's comfortable enough that I'm considering selling my car and driving it all the time. BTW, I purposely bought a model with cloth interior because I'm not crazy about leather and frankly, at least in cloth the seats on this model are more comfortable than those in the newer body style 2002-06.
I love the spacious interior and sharp looks... I'm still worried about gas milage but am enjoying the suv for now. It rides really well, turns good, and even lets you know how many miles to go before empty! Gotta love it!
Best SUV we have owned. I had a mini-van and two blazers but this beats them all for comfort, handling, and appearance. We have owned over 20 vehicles and the Mountaineer rates with the luxury cars we have owned and liked. It is a big step to enter the third row. I recommend the last row for the younger - lighter passengers. We were surprised it actually fits better in hour garage than our passenger car. I have not towed anything as yet so I can not speak to that feature. The only way we could improve on it, I think is if it were hybrid.
