I purchased my Xterra brand new and so far I have not really been disappointed. After doing some in depth research I have come to the same conclusion as everyone else, if you want to go off road buy a Jeep. I was previously a Jeep driver and I loved its off road capability but I hated its cargo space. I decided to sell my old jeep and get an xterra.
The xterra rides a lot better than the jeep ever did. I took it on a 12 hour ski trip with 3 other guys tons of gear and beer and although it was a little tight it was never uncomfortable. I was shocked at how much stuff we were able to put it in and when we got into the mounts I was impressed with its handling in snow/ice. The interior is fairly plain and the tie downs in the back are pretty awesome.
There are only three downsides so far. It gets terrible gas mileage, I am getting around 14-15mpg city 17/18 highway with a 5spd. The roof rack is pretty high up, I am 62 and have yet to easily get my mtn bike secured without falling over. The last downside is driving it off-road. Despite the fact that I splurged for the off-road model, it just doesnt perform how I want it to. I find myself unable to just let the clutch out in 1st gear and have the xterra crawl over rocky sections of trail the way my jeep used to. It always wanted to stall so I would have to give it too much gas for the situation or I would have to play with the clutch. I also noticed that when going down rocky sections there isnt enough engine braking to go sufficiently slow. If I could change those last two downsides it would be the perfect vehicle.

I have owned plenty of Nissan's in the past, but never an Xterra; let alone the PRO4X model. I have found that the PRO4X still maintains a comfortable ride even though it is equipped with Bilstein off-road shocks from the factory, along with BF Goodrich "beefy" off road tires. The Rockford Fosgate system (with subwoofer) has more than enough speakers and power. The leather interior is nice and is of great quality.
Mechanical wise I haven't had one issue except for routine tire rotations, oil changes and other routine services. I have noticed that the stated fuel economy (20mpg hwy / 16 city) is not exactly stated correctly. I have experienced more like 19 Hwy and about 14 City. I am not an aggressive driver, but find the gas mileage has alot to do with the gas pedal.
I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone that is looking for an SUV and has an active lifestyle. The Pro4X model comes standard with a differential locker from the factory (big, big, bonus) and hill descent control. (they both work awesome in mine).

I have always wanted an Xterra and finally bought a brand new one this year. This truck is one of the last body styles of a 'real' SUV and not a crossover and that is what attracted me most to it. I love the simplicity of its design inside and it does not have a million gadgets to distract you. It rides like a truck and has a rugged feel. If you are an outdoors type person this car is the best you can get for the money. It is well priced below its competitors and will be dependable if you treat it well.
I have ran Kendall oil and K&N oil filters in mine from day one and it has made a huge difference in performance. This car will last forever. It is a pig at the gas pump, but having the space and ability to haul things around makes it all worth it. Another thing I really like is how easy it is to drive, there are hardly any blind spots.
I would buy another in a heartbeat. There are 3 other Xterra's in our family and we truly believe in the car.
