love this xterra

2005 Nissan Xterra jrae - Humble 05/23/2011

always wanted an xterra, but they were too expensive new....got a great deal on a used one. The color is unique: forest green. Love the peppy V6 that doesn't eat my wallet in gas money. Love the outdoorsy look and utilitarian cargo area. i can get all my music gear EASILY in and out of this vehicle!

Overall solid

2011 Nissan Xterra Dan Stephens - Los Lunas, NM 03/25/2017

Overall stable. Gas mileage not so good but overall an off road minded vehicle. A little light weight so real snow causes problems. Stable Japanese product, I would give it 3.5 stars but not able. In grade terms somewhere between C-C+. No auxiliary jack in the S model I have but CD/stereo. Not bad transport for regular sized folks, toddler/child seat causes problems with space, a little cramped.

The Versatile Xterra

2014 Nissan Xterra BZ Dad - Westminster, CA 08/09/2015

This vehicle is just plain useful. From bringing home lumber on the roof rack to the storage under the cargo floor for tools and road side emergency supplies. I have a place for everything so there's nothing rolling around. I love the first aid kit cavity in the hatch. Two glove boxes, an oversized sunglass cubby and this nifty space in front of the shifter that holds a book on CD as if it was meant to. Need more space, just fold down the rear seats. It drives very well considering this is a truck underneath. For one tank of regular fuel I drove like your grandma and got 22 mpg combined city streets and freeway. The 261hp 4.0 liter engine gets up and moves when you need it too. It does everything I need or expect it to do.

Nissan Xterra Overview

The Nissan Xterra is a fairly conservative compact SUV that is at home on rocky trails and mountain paths is geared toward outdoors enthusiasts who want solid performance and all the best features in their vehicles.

Nissan Xterra History

The Nissan Xterra was introduced for the 2000 model year and received a feature-focused refresh in the 2002. The second generation Nissan Xterra was introduced in the 2005 model year with a larger frame than its predecessor. It received a facelift in 2009 that introduced additional feature options and body colors. The 2014 update to the Xterra included cabin enhancements such as Bluetooth and navigation options. Nissan discontinued Xterra production in 2015.

How It Drives

The Nissan Xterra excels in day-to-day use when compared to other trailblazing compact SUVs. Overall, though it may not be the first choice for commuters due to its less-than-stellar fuel economy, the vehicle is still an attractive choice thanks to its smooth handling. Also, this SUV boasts great strength and ruggedness off the road.

Used Nissan Xterra Value

If you are in the market for an affordable, off-road worthy vehicle that can double as an everyday driver, the Nissan Xterra is worth a look. When it comes to trailblazing, the Xterra is a solid counterpart to the ever-popular Jeep Wrangler. All concerns with power are remedied with the second generation improved engine, so shoppers seeking improved powertrain may want to look at later editions of this vehicle.

Design & Performance

  • the Nissan Xterra is designed to be a very capable trailblazer with a steady suspension and a sturdy frame.
  • second generation Nissan Xterra models are better at towing than previous editions due to more powerful engines.
  • the baselevel Nissan Xterra X has full-power accessories and comfortable cabin.
  • the Nissan Xterra S adds mostly quality-of-life features for frequent luggage carriers, such as cargo anchors and hooks.
  • the Nissan Xterra SE anyone seeking an off-road ready SUV with luxurious seats.
  • Made specifically to satisfy the most rugged outdoors enthusiasts and campers, Nissan produced the Xterra off road to make a breeze.

Powertrain & Engine

The second-generation Nissan Xterra is equipped with a 4.0L V6 engine. It's paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, and offers a six-speed manual transmission as an optional swap-in. In contrast, if you are in the market for a used first-generation Xterra, expect completely different parts under the hood. These Nissan Xterra models have either a 2.4L V4 engine or a 3.3L V6 engine. These engines are equipped with either a four-speed automatic transmission or, if you prefer, a five-speed manual transmission.

Body Style & Interior Comfort

  • Though it was built as a compact SUV, the Nissan Xterra still has a very tall and sturdy frame.
  • It seats up to five passengers.
  • The driver's seating offers relative comfort even on the rockiest trails.
  • Higher trim levels have become increasingly outdoors-ready and comfortable as well.
