I traded into this car from a Mustang simply because I wanted an automatic. The first thing that struck me about the G6 was how very spacious the interior is. You can comfortably fit 4 adults. The second selling point to me was how smooth the ride was. I can honestly say it's a joy to drive. Granted, it doesn't have the pick that my 6 cylinder had but still love it.
First of all, being born in Britain I am used to cars being small and under-powered. But this also means a car that has generally good handling as we're used to ripping around roundabouts and tight country lanes. In the ten years I've been in the US I haven't seen many US designed and built cars under $20,000 that qualify as "European". That is until you get to the Pontiac G6. I had rented a Pontiac Grand Prix a few years back and was impressed. Then last year I got to drive a G6 (in 2.0l form, not the 3.5l V6) which was nice in terms of build, but not quick enough. But that experience was enough that when I was in the market for a reasonably priced used car, I first searched for a G6. I found a 3.5l V6 Pontiac G6, which had previously been a lease car, and was in immaculate condition with not a scratch on it. Add to that the fact that it had only done 9,500 miles and I knew it was a great deal. The engine and gearbox combo is great. With a light foot she's a nice easy ride that positively glides everywhere. But if you keep the accelerator towards the floor and she'll keep the revs high and move very quickly. It's especially good at accelerating between 50-70 when you just want to pass that irritating guy in the middle lane. It appears the gearbox was designed just for this maneuver. The disc brakes all around give good stopping ability too. Handling is great around town and as I implied earlier evokes a more European feel. Even my father who is a devout Audi fan commented on how firm it felt. On a few occasions, in the wet especially, you can get some under steer in low speed bends. But I would expect that, rather than over steer, in a road car. The driving experience is most pleasant inside. Visibility out front is more than adequate, but rear-view isn't perfect due to the head restraints in the back. I am considering removing them temporarily as they create a blind spot. As for downsides there are a few concerning aerodynamics. When you have your driver's side window open a few inches you can get a very load and unsettling buffeting noise at about 40mph. You can get rid of it by also lowering the rear passenger window about the same amount. Secondly, it's not the easiest car to get into if you are 6 foot 3 like me, but once inside it is very comfortable with plenty of headroom.
This vehicle has been excellent so far. It had low mileage when we bought it and was in great condition. We noticed two small problems after buying, which Carmax took care of with no problems. Some of the interior plastics are cheaply made so care is needed in handling ( cup holders) and some of the flashing panels. On the plus side, the car handles great and the included options on the GXP model are all welcome, especially the Moonsoon audio upgrade and seats. Watch out for very low clearance on driveway entrances...you may need to come in at angle or get a bridgit curb ramp to alleviate this. Overall much nicer and larger than the Miata, and more headroom and viewing space than the sky.
