It took me a while to get used to this car to be honest. I used to drive a hyundai sonata. Switching from any car to a Smart will be an adjustment, but let me tell you, it's worth it. I have so much fun driving in it and I get waved at by other Smarts on the road! I really don't even miss the extra space, because the trunk hatch back has more room than you think. I can fit over $100 worth of groceries back there! Gas mileage is excellent, I spend about 30 dollars a week of premium gas, as opposed to $60 a week with my hyundai. (I have a long commute- that's why) NOTE: Oil changes are about $80 and make sure you get one every 3 months. Takes Smart's take synthetic oil only. My only negative observation is that while driving at a slow or idle speed (parking lots or traffic) I sometimes feel like my Smart will stall. Also.... in very windy conditions, smarts are very sensitive to wind, so hold on tight to that wheel. If you are looking for a fun and quality little whip, go for a SMART. :)

Too much fun!

Love this car! Awesome for short commutes and running errands. You can fit more in the back then you would think.

Driving Smart is Fun

The SmartCar is a very interesting car to drive... but be warned you have to understand what you are getting. If you are looking for a tiny car that drives like a Cadillac and has the speed of a Ferrari you will be sorely disappointed. That being said the Smart car is a lot of fun to drive, though again, you have to understand what you are getting and it will take some getting used to. The first thing you have to be aware of is automatic transmission doesn't work like transmissions in other automobiles. When switching gears if you keep your foot on the gas the car will drag as it moves to the next gear. (especially with the A/C on) Most of my "car guy" friends suggested vacuum leaks or suggested that something is wrong with the car, but this is incorrect. All you have to do is lift up on the gas, a bit, like a standard and the gear changes become smooth. This and, of course, the "small car ride" are the only big stumbling blocks for most folks, unaware of what they are getting in to. The maneuverability, pep and overall fun of the vehicle make for a great driving experience. All of the on board control systems, like the manual gear selectors on the wheel (tapping left and right to bump gears up and down and holding to select automatic drive), the tire pressure warnings, and the all around simplicity of the dash are of some note. Oh, one thing it took me a bit to find... on the stock stereo the AUX jack is in the glove box. That is really the only annoying thing I've found. Everything else takes a little adjustment but once you make the switch you won't regret it. It may not be for everybody, but it's definitely the car for me.
