The smart car is a lot of fun to drive. It reminds me of a sports car when in manual drive, both the shifting and the steering. It is very roomy and comfortable; all my tall friends are surprised to find that they fit into it with lots of room to spare. The transmission takes a while to get used to. The automatic shifting is jerky until you learn how to feather the accelerator to help with the shift, especially in the lower gears. I often use manual in traffic because performance is brisker that way. After you have driven it for a while there is no problem. On the road it is a treat to drive, regardless of which transmission you use; it has more than adequate speed and pickup to drive easily at highway speed, even in hilly territory. I feel perfectly safe in it and the small size is no problem. And of course, the size makes it a snap to park and to maneuver in city traffic. Altogether I am very glad I bought it.
I thougth I'd find this car to be fun, but it's exceeded all of my expectations! It's not only fun, it's comfortable, sooo well thought out design-wise (it's not a problem at all fitting my groceries or gardening purchases into the back area) and extremely fuel efficient. It handles beautifully and it's great to be able to take advantage of it's size when the only place to park is tight and small. The only disadvantage that I can see is that everyone you know will want a ride in it! ;-)
i had always seen smarts on the road, never actually meeting one or being able to see one up close. i've been wanting a smart fortwo ever since they were brought to the US in 2007. we initially applied at smart, through mercedes-benz financing, to purchase a smart and since we weren't approved, we tried for our 09 smart fortwo passion (with lots of options!) and were approved. now that we've had it for little over a month and put almost 2000 miles on her since we bought her, we can confidently say that she is definitely an amazing vehicle. Gizmo (as we named her) drives smoothly, with great acceleration for such a small car. the suspension is nice and responsive, feeling almost like a sport set up on any other car. somewhat stiff, but we're used to it because we've owned many modified hondas. the soft seats, great upright seating position make up for the suspension. brakes grab well, engine is quiet. THE AC BLOWS SUPER COLD! the interior materials may seem lesser quality (not cheap, just not top of the line) to those who have owned a more expensive car. but to someone who has owned many 'economy' cars, the smart feels luxuriously designed. the sound system is great, the panoramic roof is best at night or at dusk time, where the sun isn't beating down on you (if you live in a sunny area). over all, we LOVE our car.. she gets amazing gas mileage (averaging 45 mpg with 75% city driving, 25% highway driving) and people love to come up and ask questions. we like the attention, but even more so the aftermarket parts we can get for her :D
