Reviews for 2009 Subaru Forester
Lacking in Fit and Finish
Bought one of these cars after thinking about owning one for years. The 2009 is a nice upgrade from previous years. It's roomier (very nice), quieter, rides better, and has a more modern interior. I think mechanically you can trust these cars. Subaru has built a pretty solid reputation on their boxer engine and all wheel drive drivetrain. Based on what I've heard from other owners these things stay on the road for years. What's lacking however is the fit and finish of this car's interior. Noises from the inside are quite annoying, lots of fasteners that buzz, panel pieces, etc. Given its solid feel on the road and the soundness of its drivetrain it's really disappointing that the same level of craftmanship wasn't shown in assembling the inside. Oh well, gas mileage is good. I see 30/31 mpg hwy if going 60mph. At 70mph it drops to 28mpg. Mixed driving: 24/25mpg. Lacks some low end torque compared to previous years but otherwise acceleration w/ a 5spd manual is sufficient. I would recommend this car with disclaimers.
Forester aka "rattle trap"
This little SUV is a good runner but underpowered with the 2.5 boxer. The car rattles like you can't believe! It went back to the dealer multiple times and they were not able to resolve all of the rattles. It handles well, just to much of a rattle box for me to keep.
Our Forester is my 2nd Subaru, with the first being a Subaru Brat in 1982... Anyway, back to the review. Our Forester is great. The only problem we had was rather LARGE when we first got the car. There was a problem with the Front Differential. Luckily I noticed the strange noise that was occurring at 60MPH+ on the freeway early into our ownership experience. We took it back to Carmax, and they ended up fixing it, to the tune of over $3K! Thank God we weren't on the hook for this repair. Other than this, the car has been absolutely bulletproof! It handles great, and we get over 25MPG on average per every single tankful. The car is a gem. I would definitely recommend buying a Subaru, and I would definitely recommend buying your Subaru from Carmax! This was our 3rd vehicle purchased from Carmax.
