Just got the 2008 Subaru Impreza hatchback and I love it! It handles very well and has great pickup when you step on the gas. There's plenty of leg room in the back and in the trunk, enough cup-holders, and the seats are quite comfortable. I've already tested it in the snow, in reverse and up a hill, and it works like a charm. The high-beams are phenomenal and were an extra surprise after the purchase. The sound system works great and is easy to use. The engine, in both automatic and sport mode (shifting with no clutch), runs very smoothly. I look forward to putting a lot of miles on this car and having many adventures. Bottom line: if you're looking for a fun car, get an Impreza!
The Impreza is a nice, smooth ride. The car has a low center of gravity and AWD so it really hugs the road and corners excellently. The seats are extremely comfortable and the height adjustment for the driver's seat is very helpful. All in all a lot of fun to drive.
'08 Subaru WRX Hatch Review
After driving my WRX for a little over a month, I have been very pleased with my decision of purchasing this car. The model I have is great; it doesn�t have any needless extras like navigation, HIDs, backup camera, etc. It�s a good looking wagon that can carry lots of stuff with good pace and with good comfort. Overall comfort is good, the seats are very supportive, and the steering wheel has good adjustment. The pedals have great placement for heal � toe shifting and are centered well in the footbox. Ride is soft, sucks up the bumps well, though the car is a little underdamped and a little heavy on body roll. Biggest disappointment, as with all modern cars, is not being able to cruise with your arm on the top of the door. Performance is very good for this price point, and the all wheel drive will set the car apart from its competitors. The car would be nicer with a bit more power, but what it has in the 2008 trim is adequate. As mentioned before, a little underdamped, and heavy on the body roll, but the car can still be hustled about. At the limit, the car predictably transitions to understeer, given its nose heavy disposition. Turbo lag is present, but only for people who foolishly lug the car around. Torque is plentiful above 3K and serves the car nicely to slice and dice SUV laden traffic. The throttle by wire system could use better calibration, but this is surely no fault of Subaru. Quick throttle blips for proper shifting become difficult with the throttle curves failing to respond as quick as a cable actuated throttle would. Quality is good for a Subaru and a car of this age (purchased in 2012). Interior shows only some minor usage scratches, and the hard trim parts have held up well. Drivetrain quality is good as well, with no problems noted so far. If you are a stickler for a silent drivetrain, do not buy this car. The drivetrain with its full time all wheel drive will make more noise than what a Camry driver would consider normal. You will feel the differentials shifting power around, and a failure to rev-match on a quick shift will yield a thud from the back differential. Shifting is a little vague, and could use a little more feedback to tell when the gear is fully engaged. The biggest quality disappointment is the aging of the hood scoop surround, and the hatch spoiler. The sun in the southeast has baked off a lot of clearcoat and started to oxidize the paint. While all of the other painted parts have survived, these two locations have suffered. The headlights also showed some haze (OK at this age) but some light plastic rubbing compound cleared this up. A properly cared for car would not be likely to show these problems. I really like the appearance of this car, and strongly prefer the hatchback/wagon design to the sedan model. Aside from the paint issues mentioned above, likely caused by a lack of waxing by previous owners, the only other issues I have with the appearance are the clear taillight lens and reflectors in the rear; this will shortly be corrected with some affordable overlays in red. The car is quite benign looking, which I enjoy, well, except for maybe that big hood scoop. Finally, overall value for the money would be the lowest score, just making a 3 out of 5. Of course there is the premium fuel required by the turbo, but that is expected. And with the WRX, fuel economy and a cushy ride is set aside for a car that has a great crash safety record and all wheel drive. If you wanted raw performance, you�ll get a speed3, and if you want to be coddled in a high dollar cabin, you have the GTi. But if what you really appreciate is the surefootedness of the all-wheel drive in packed into a robust chassis, with the room for 3 friends and their stuff, the WRX is the obvious choice.
