A low-mileage 2010 - 2012 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5 i is a great choice for a mid-size sedan. I am in my fifties and have owned many vehicles since 1974, Honda and Toyota autos mostly. In 2001 we bought our first Subaru. Subaru focuses on solid reliable designs, with a emphasis on safety, both active and passive. This is my second Legacy, the first was a 2000 (from Carmax). My 2010 is a much more refined, comfortable car, which handles confidently. The MPGs improved with the CV transmission over the old 4-speed automatic and gets about 25-26 in-town. I got 29 on a trip from Dallas to Houston going 75 most of the way. The Legacy is not a rocket, but can safely get around in Dallas traffic. Brakes are great. This one has the H-K sound package and CD's and iPod sound great.
