2016 Subaru WRX Augusto Beltrame - Colorado Springs, CO 02/26/2017

If your a car enthusiast then you'll know why someone would pick a subaru sti plus I have a special edition which makes it even better.

2016 Subaru WRX Overview

The story of the Subaru WRX starts with the automaker's Impreza, the compact vehicle that's been in production since 1992. Originally intended to be a replacement to Subaru's Leone model, the Impreza is a four-door hatchback that is offered in both front-and all-wheel drive variations. So just where does the WRX fit in with the Impreza? It's because the performance models of the Impreza have become known simply as the "WRX" in many markets, such as the North American market. WRX models, specifically, are built off of the base Impreza model but feature turbocharged engines and offer more all-around performance.

2016 Subaru WRX History

The 2016 WRX is the debut model in Subaru's fifth generation of the model.

The 2016 Impreza was initially showcased at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, and the first automobiles hit dealer lots in December of the same year. Though the Impreza is available in both sedan and hatchback models, the 2016 WRX is only available in sedan format. Some other things to note about the 2016 WRX include:

  • Its platform: For the first time, it's built on the Subaru Global Platform. The Subaru Global Platform puts a greater emphasis on adaptability to alternative powertrains upon its introduction. Though it made its introduction with the 2016 Impreza, it became the foundation for all Subaru vehicles from then on.
  • The 2016 WRX was offered in four variants: STI, Sedan, STI Limited, and STI Series.HyperBlue. The latter is a special edition that's specific to the 2016 model year.
  • One notable upgrade from 2015 model years is that all trim upgrades now have touchscreen interfaces and smartphone connectivity.

How It Drives

As you might expect from a turbocharged compact sedan, the 2016 WRX drives and handles similar to a sports car. Though you can hear a bit of outside noise and wind in the cabin, the car accelerates quickly and handles turns responsively and with ease. In addition, base models come with all-wheel drive, which makes it easier to enjoy all year-round for those who live in areas where winter weather poses a driving challenge.

Used 2016 Subaru WRX Value

Since the 2016 model year is still fairly new, the vehicle hasn't had a lot of time to depreciate. The base model WRX MSRP was listed at $26,595, and most used models consider fair market price somewhere in the $25,000 range. This price point is comparable to 2016 used models, such as the Mazda3, Mitsubishi Lancer, and Volkswagen GTI, based on their original market prices.

Design & Performance

There's plenty of swagger behind the WRX's design to give it that sporty look and feel. For instance, standard models offer 17-inch wheels that help give it a bold look from the exterior (premium trim models offer 18-inch wheels). Additionally, you'll find a truck spoiler and a sunroof are available on higher-end trims.

In terms of performance, the WRX is designed and engineered to give drivers that sporty feel. It does so with features such as:

  • A 2L turbocharged engine capable of generating up to 268 hp, which helps it go zero to 60 mph in less than six seconds.
  • STI WRXs come equipped with a 2.5L four-cylinder that can generate over 300 hp.
  • Fuel economy is still respectable. The WRX has a combined 23 mpg fuel economy on standard models, while STI models with the 2.5L four-cylinder achieve 19 combined mpg.

Powertrain & Engine

As noted in the opening, the WRX is a high-performance variation of the Impreza, so the engine is designed to perform. Base models have a 2L turbocharged four-cylinder that can generate 268 hp, and STI models feature a 2.5L four-cylinder that can generate over 300 hp. Several different transmissions are also available on WRX models. There's a six-speed manual transmission and a continuous variable transmission, or CVT, that is designed to work with either a six-speed or eight-speed automatic transmission.

Body Style & Interior Comfort

The WRX isn't necessarily designed to look like a sports car; it's just designed to drive like one. However, the rear spoiler and large wheel size help give it a sporty look to a certain extent. Like previous WRX models, the 2016 model year is a four-door, five-seat vehicle. The HyperBlue model is a bit different from the others in the family, as it includes special paint and trim. On the interior, despite limited sound-deadening, there are several new notable features to point out. These include:

  • Sport front seats
  • Keyless ignition
  • An optional front collision warning system
  • Automatic climate control
  • Optional blind spot detection
