Deep Engineering Under A Retro Surface
2009 Toyota FJ CruiserDC writer - Washington DC06/02/2009
This is my second FJ Cruiser 4X4, and I'm more sold on it than ever. I learned the extent of the engineering that went into the car after a spectacular accident with a Ford Explorer; one in which I was stuck full-on, right at the driver's door by the Ford (which had begun to roll onto two wheels when it collided with me). It's often a foregone conclusion that a door-strike will kill the driver behind it, and I had that in mind during the last second as I saw the grill of the Explorer aimed right for my head. But when the impact came, the aluminum crash cage that the FJ Cruiser has, completely absorbed the force of the impact; the curtain airbags and side-bolster airbags both fired and kept me from slamming into the crushed doors and shattered window. After a minute or so, I climbed out without a scratch. The FJ was destroyed, but about two weeks later, I was back in a 2009 model, feeling even safer than before. The FJ Cruiser echoes the old 70's FJ-40 styling, but underneath the skin is the hidden marvel of modern engineering.
Best car ever!

I know that the mileage is terrible and YES, it pains me every time I go to the pump. I do not do a whole lot of driving so I don't really care. I just love this vehicle! It is huge and fun and there are no other cars or trucks on the road like it.
