I've only had my Prius a short time but I absolutely love it!. The two-phase way it starts takes a little getting used to, especially since it is so whisper-quiet. I have the so-called Level II amenity package so not all of the available bells and whistles but enough for me. I love the constant feedback on the fuel usage/MPG although at first you tend to get so enthusiastic about watching that screen that you have to remind yourself to watch the road! I am consistently averaging nearly 50 MPG with mixed city/highway driving but about 75% highway. This is with the cruise set at 72 mph in general. I know I could do much better at 65 mph but I couldn't bear being flipped off and honked at constantly. The hatchback section is pretty spacious for a small car. My daughter has a manual wheelchair that fits there if we remove the wheels and collapse it just a little. A friend tried to fit an extra-large stroller in and the stroller was too wide in the folded position, so maybe a Camry would be better for that. Several suitcases would go in just fine, and of course, the back seats fold forward for added room if needed. The back seats are pretty standard. More than adequate for kids, comfortable enough for adults, though I don't think I'd want to ride back there on a 1000-mile trip as an adult. The handling and turning radius is typical for a Toyota--extraordinary.
For the majority of people, the Package 2 is all that you need. It includes an AUX outlet, Keyless and Remote start(Smart Key), Rearview/Backup camera, and rear seats that fold flat. I can fit a screen door, a 26 inch mountain bike, and a few 2x4's in the rear with the seats folded flat. Currently I have 13,000 miles and have been averaging 48mpg in a very hilly area. If you drive 65-70MPH on the highway, 48+MPG is easily attainable.
I have observed the prius for the past 5 years . After reading the reviews I came to the conclusion that it was the car for me. I bought one a month ago and have been driving it daily to include a road trip of 1200 miles (the weekend after purchase) I am totaly impressed. the comfort and head room are exceptional, the body looks as though it came out of the showroom.and I can not say enough about the gas mileage. other cars talk about 32 even 40 MPG, the 2008 Prius has ( with some attention to driving habits) given me arround 50 - 52 MPG so far, I do believe it is due to the information on the touch screen, and keeping the speed down.... I would highly recommend this auto to all !
