TRD Off-Road (4 wheel drive) Tacoma. I needed a solid 4WD performer for work on the beach. Very happy with this one. The rear view camera is very helpful. Be aware, if you need to do towing or heavy hauling--capacity is quite limited. But the advantage of this small truck size is that it's almost as easy to drive as a Camry.
Hard to Find, Worth the Wait

1- This is the only mid-size truck worth owning and has been rated as #1 for many, many years. This is a real value holder. Love the useless air-scoop!
2- The Sport-TRD Model is a great highway vehicle and works hard on our farm too. Does not have all the rock-hopper extras, for that you need the TRD Off-road version it has no scoop.
The jury is still out...

If there was a 'maybe' response, I'd choose it. The ride is tolerable. The TRD Off-Road package (with 4WD) is very capable off-road. Handling is not bad for a truck with an off-road oriented suspension and off-road tires. It is a maneuverable package and fits fairly well in tight spots.
Fuel economy- I'm unable to hit the combined EPA rating. My highway mileage averages about 18-19 MPG driving slow. I don't tow. I usually have about 50 lbs worth of gear in the bed.
Power is not bad. However, it feels like it is all in the higher rev range.
In the 25k miles I've had it, one of the rear brakes leaked. The transfer case leaked. The power steering rack had to be replaced. One of the rear back-up sensors failed and had to be replaced.
