So far the Jetta's been great!! The best thing about the TDI is that I get approx 40 mpg city and 55 mpg highway! Also really like the huge trunk, great 6 disc mp3 sound system and great handling. The Jetta TDI is definitely worth the $$$!
I have been a Vee-Dub lover for ten plus years and absolutely love my 2006 Jetta! It drives like a vehicle should, powerfully hugging the road and shifting smoothly with the rev of perfection! The only thing I do not like is the steering wheel, as it does not fit comfortably like a wheel should... but while I drop into third gear nearing fifty mpg, my little engine growls at me, pleading "faster, faster". This car is absolutely perfect!
Overall, the Jetta 2.5 is a wonderful car. The 2 star rating on comfort is a result of a poorly-designed seat. Not an issue for commuter use, but on long trips, my lower back was pretty uncomfortable, and the lumbar back support was barely noticeable. Performance is good (the 5th cylinder gives the 2.5 a nice boost when needed). Naturally, you're not getting the power of a 6 or 8 cylinder, but this is a small sacrifice when considering the improved gas mileage. The 2006 models of Jettas have improved the appearance over the 2005s & older. Still, the styling is pretty basic, and without the large VW emblems, it could be easy to confuse the car with other makes. The lack of a distinctive styling prevented a 5-star rating from where I sit. Not listed above are the available amenities. The stereo in my model has a 6 CD changer that reads MP3 CDs - a great feature. Sound is also of high quality. Controls are easy to read, though the red center guage panel is a bit bright, compared to the violet analog controls surrounding it. Heat and air are magnificent for a small car (I've had my share of small cars that barely push out the heat, even in cool weather). Handling is good, but it seems VW has lost something since their earlier models. I owned a 1990 Jetta that was a blast on the highway - pure fun. It seems as though the newer models have lost their way slightly in the 'fun-to-drive' category. All in all, the 06 Jetta is a good vehicle with a nice balance between performance and mileage. I would buy another, and would recommend, but I would like to see redisigned front seating with more focus on comfort, and a bit more distinctive styling.
