We purchased the VW Routan a few months ago, since then we have driven to Disney and back (1500 miles) With 3 kids and luggage loaded we still had plenty of room. The two screen DVD is great and the kids love being able to play 2 different movies at the same time, Mom and Dad love it more!
This is my third VW (00' golf, 07 Passat previously) so I am pretty much a VW guy. The first thing anyone should know is that the Routan is a Chrysler with VW branding and a few VW upgrades. I wish they had included a bit more of the VW touches, such as the paddle bars for cruise control, wipers, etc.
I think the exterior is well done and has the look of a VW.
The powerplant is adequate. The transmission seems to have to shift to a lower gear pulling up hills on the interstate at high speeds(75-80). We will see over time how this plays out.
The fuel economy is pretty good for the engine and size of vehicle. 27mpg on the highway running 75-80.
Overall, we are pleased with our purchase, we could not have gotten all of the bells and whistles on a Yukon or Suburban at the price level of the Routan. I would tell anyone to purchase the Routan, but know that it is a Chrysler at heart and not a VW.
