We had to get rid of my 1/2 ton pickup due to a growing family and I can honestly say I don't regret the swap for a minute. The interior space is great and it's actually fun to drive. It handles much tighter than most sedans and it doesn't have the "minivan" feel and body roll when cornering. I had heard all the horror stories about VW Maitanence costs but because it's based on the Chrystleg platform I have had no problems at my local shop. Plus it's nice to get the occasional compliment about how good your minivan looks.
When you find yourself at the SUV or van crossroads, sometimes you get the van. Not as butch, stylish or rugged as an SUV, but definitely more roomy and versatile. And sometimes, it just because that's what your wife wants. So when you must buy the most van for the money, you cannot beat the Routan. Discontinued by it's manufacturer(s) VW and Chrysler for the '13 model year. It's depreciation makes it a phenomenal used car buy. Of course we looked at the competition, but deciding to buy used changed many of the factors. The Honda Odyssey's resale was too strong to consider, you might as well buy new. Besides the fact that it's style is best described as hideous. Styling is not a van strong point with any of the competitors, but getting the ugliest wasn't what I had in mind. The Chrysler/Dodge twins were also a great buy, but come with the specter of a dealer body that wasn't very kindly reviewed locally. The Toyota looked like it may have been a safe bet, as it depreciated quicker than the Honda, and had good local Toyota dealers to support it. But after seeing how much more Routan I could buy for the money, I reconsidered. The V6 is strong and delivers reasonable highway fuel economy. Our SEL Premium has two DVD screens that can play two separate sources to keep the headphone-equipped kids occupied while Mom and Dad listen to music from the 30 gig hard drive. HID headlights, remote start, memory seats, the works. The VW even includes 3 yr/36k maintenance at no charge. Look fast because they are disappearing quickly.
