I own a Routan SEL with a premium package. This van is plagued with brake and rotor problems, vehicle less then 30,000 miles and have had to have them replaced several times. Now having issues with the check engine light and the thermostat, in the shop for the 5th time in the last 2 months. Don't make a costly mistake, it's a beauty on the outside and the style inside is nice, but if you are looking for reliability and quality, look elsewhere!
We purchased the VW Routan a few months ago, since then we have driven to Disney and back (1500 miles) With 3 kids and luggage loaded we still had plenty of room. The two screen DVD is great and the kids love being able to play 2 different movies at the same time, Mom and Dad love it more! This is my third VW (00' golf, 07 Passat previously) so I am pretty much a VW guy. The first thing anyone should know is that the Routan is a Chrysler with VW branding and a few VW upgrades. I wish they had included a bit more of the VW touches, such as the paddle bars for cruise control, wipers, etc. I think the exterior is well done and has the look of a VW. The powerplant is adequate. The transmission seems to have to shift to a lower gear pulling up hills on the interstate at high speeds(75-80). We will see over time how this plays out. The fuel economy is pretty good for the engine and size of vehicle. 27mpg on the highway running 75-80. Overall, we are pleased with our purchase, we could not have gotten all of the bells and whistles on a Yukon or Suburban at the price level of the Routan. I would tell anyone to purchase the Routan, but know that it is a Chrysler at heart and not a VW.
We love this vehicle! The fuel economy isn't as great with in-city driving, but on the road it's good (23 mpg average). Very quiet in the cabin while driving, smooth ride. The sun/moon roof is really enjoyable!
