About the Volkswagen GLI

Overview

If you like the stylish design and compact size of the Volkswagen Jetta but could use something with a little more zest under the hood, try on the GLI for size. This five-passenger sedan is marketed as the performance version of the Jetta—offering a sport-tuned suspension, upgraded brakes, and a standard turbocharged 2.0L engine.

The GLI is offered as part of the Jetta's sixth generation of production (2013-2018) and saw a fresh redesign for the 2019 model year (seventh generation). On its 2019 base model, you'll find such standard features as a limited-slip differential, heated front seats, and even smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto. Be sure to check out this small-but-mighty sedan as you shop for your next vehicle.

A: It is believed that "GLI" in this instance stands for "Grand Luxe Injected" or "Grand Luxury Injection."

For example, the 2016 GLI features performance-oriented features like a sport-tuned suspension, sport seats, upgraded brakes, and a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine at 210 hp. The standard engine on a 2016 Jetta, on the other hand, is a turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder at 150 hp.

Volkswagen GLI Trim Configurations

The Volkswagen GLI has been offered in a number of trim configurations over the past two generations, though the base engine size has remained the same: a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder. Hp output for this engine increases slightly with the 2019 redesign at 228 hp versus the previous 210 hp. Front-wheel drive and a six- or seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission are also standard.

- Rachel Donovan, 2012 Volkswagen GLI

If you want a fun to drive car with German engineering at $20K less than a BMW

With a six speed manual transmission it is a blast to drive. Turbo 4 cyl has tons of pick up for taking off and for passing. A fun car all the way around.

Pros

  • Power: Turbo 4 is a blast to drive
  • Ride and Handling: For every day fun even when you aren't on curvy mountain roads it is great.
  • Interior Space: Leg room in rear seat is expansive-much larger than my TSX

Cons

  • Cabin Noise: Performance tires with a lower cost vehicle = some road noise
  • Fuel Economy: Still average 23 in town and 31-32 on highway with some spirited driving!

- Vince Richardson, 2012 Volkswagen GLI
