What a great car! I shopped around for months before finally deciding that the GTI was the right fit. The design is clean, modern and simple (inside and out). Interior controls are easy to use; I was able to sync my iPhone in less than 2 minutes and love being able to play iTunes via Bluetooth. Interior finish is on par with a more expensive car. I am 6 ft. tall and have tons of head and legroom (the back seat can be a tight for taller people, but there is ample headroom and space for 4 adults). Trunk space is deceptively bigger than you would think and both seats fold down completely (I fit an 8 ft. long piece of 2x4 in the car with no issues). Touch screen and in dash displays are easy to use and navigate. This car is a lot of fun to drive and I still find myself looking for an excuse to "run errands". I average about 33-34 on long highway drives and about 22-24 in the city. My only negatives are that some of the interior knob settings are difficult to see, you cannot use bluetooth and connect your iPhone to the provided port at the same time (you have to disable bluetooth if you want to connect your phone directly to the provided port), and it takes premium gas (but it is a sportscar after all).

My father warned me about VW. I should have listened. I bought a 2012 GTI new in August of 2012. Initially the car was pretty good I have to admit. The performance was good, it was comfortable, and the utility of the thing was better than any small car I can imagine. Things started to head South around 30k miles. First came the intake manifold. Carbon deposits on the intake valves and within the air manifold are issues with this engine. Even running the prescribed gasoline and changing the oil on time everytime, the manifold was replaced at around 32k under warranty, but as with most service I had to miss some work. Then came the battery. Completely dead at 40k miles. Had to tow the car and pay $160 for a new battery. Then came the thermostat at 45k. The thermostat failed in the closed position causing the car to rapidly overheat while I was 300 miles from my home with my wife, my son, and our dog in tow. I had to fight with VW to get it fixed under warranty and when I came to pick up the car (300 miles from home) somehow it was not done when they said it was going to be done so now I get to miss two days of work and have to find a place to stay away from home. Three pretty significant failures before 50k miles.
If VW wants to be the biggest car company in the world (which currently is their stated goal) they should learn to make cars first. Don't by this car.
