Purchased new 2009 VW Routan. Unfortunately, nothing but problems! Three pairs of brakes/rotors in 18k miles. AC keeps leaking Freon and won't keep car cold over 90 degrees. Had transmission leak on floor in garage. Fixed leaky seal, but transmission still clunks into gears when shifting. Cruise control varies by 7-8 MPH. Gas mileage is HORRIBLE in town. 14 at best. Hwy is okay at 22 or 23. Ride is nice and quiet, but really lacks power. If you want a lemon that looks nicer than other minivans, buy this. If not, spend the extra money on a Honda or Toyota.
We had to get rid of my 1/2 ton pickup due to a growing family and I can honestly say I don't regret the swap for a minute. The interior space is great and it's actually fun to drive. It handles much tighter than most sedans and it doesn't have the "minivan" feel and body roll when cornering. I had heard all the horror stories about VW Maitanence costs but because it's based on the Chrystleg platform I have had no problems at my local shop. Plus it's nice to get the occasional compliment about how good your minivan looks.
