2023 Audi e-tron shows its age

The electric vehicle market is moving with tremendous velocity and constant change. Electric vehicles that don’t evolve every year will be left behind. Sadly, that’s the case with the 2023 Audi e-tron, also known as the Q8 e-tron. In a way, the e-tron offers everything you could ask in the way of European luxury and it has a great tech package. The SUV body style makes the e-tron very versatile for carrying cargo or people, and it’s extremely smooth and comfortable to drive. Massaging seats are available, along with futuristic features like a head-up display. However, as nice as it is, it’s a matter of range. The EPA-estimated range of the 2023 model has increased to 222 miles, but that figure significantly trails many competitors. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info. It has the quick acceleration performance that makes EVs popular, though, so if shorter range fits into your lifestyle, the e-tron may still be a good option for you.

What We Like

Interior space: The e-tron is a midsize SUV, and because it’s an EV, the interior layout can be different from vehicles with an engine and transmission. The e-tron offers a spacious and comfortable back seat as well as luxury front seats, and it still offers 29 cubic feet for cargo behind the second row and 57 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down.

Impressive performance: The e-tron has two electric motors driving all four wheels. Like most EVs, it’s quick off the line and offers impressive acceleration. However, it’s not overpowered like some sport EVs, so it never feels muscle-bound either. Beyond the motors, the e-tron drives like an Audi—smooth and sporty—and it’s quiet inside.

Tech package: Audi delivers a modern tech package with the e-tron, including dual touchscreens stacked in the center of the dash. The top screen is for infotainment and smartphone integration, and the bottom controls vehicle functions. There’s also an optional Bang & Olufsen premium audio system, which sounds great.

What Needs Improvement

EV range: The e-tron could really benefit from an increase in battery capacity to keep pace with models introduced in the last few years. But as of the 2023 model year, 222 miles is what you can expect, even though some reviewers have stretched that by about another 20 miles through careful driving.
