As my first BMW I was excited by the styling, performance, and reputation of BMW. Though I test drove it thoroughly, I overlooked the lack of comfort. The vehicle rides like a truck, and I'm not talking a comfortable full-size pickup. I'm talking a 2 ton construction site hauler. It's stiff, rough, and jars the body with every imperfection in the road. A 3 hour trip becomes agony after the first hour. I may have been spoiled by my 15 year old Mercedez, but seriously, my wife's new Hundai commuter-car rides far better. On the mechanical side, I've gotten to know my servicewriter on a first name basis. In three months I've relaced the thermostat, the air conditioning controls, and last week the aternator and battery. Last week's invoice totaled $1200! Though my aftermarket battery beat BMW's specs on every measure, BMW would only honor a two-year warranty on the new alternator if it were paired with a BMW battery. The BMW battery was $285. Want performance? Buy a BMW (if you can afford the upkeep). Want comfortable and reliability, buy a Lexus. Thank God for CarMax. I wont be keeping this car very long.
The '06 530i in my opinion has the best balance of performance and economy in the 5 series. Solid, quiet car. The regular suspension is sufficiently athletic; beware the harsh ride of the sport package suspension [distinguished by black trim over the windows, 7 spoke wheels, front seats with wrap-around bolsters] and the obstacle to entry/exit the wrap around seat bolster may present short people. This is one case where less is more. Basic music/HVAC functions have dash buttons; more advanced functions and settings are accessed via i-Drive electronics. Not hard to master but ccassional drivers will need a refresher. i-Drive may intimidate some drivers. Trunk is hugh. Rear seat is roomy. Driver's cup holder is a joke. Fit and finish is impressive. There was a mid-model year change: The traditional key start was replaced by a bulky electronic smart key and push start/stop button on the dash, this continues to present models. Less ergonomic because it requires two distinct movements in place of inserting and rotating key. BMW is high in driving satisfaction.
