The Taurus has a reputation for bad transmissions, especially from the early '90s. The 1996 is better than earlier models so far as the transmission, but it's still NOT a great transmission.
I had a '92 Taurus where the transmission failed completely. This car also has transmission issues. When put into drive, car jumps forward when the gear connects. Sometimes it shifts roughly. I've had to take it to the dealer for the transmission.
The 3.0 V6 is plenty of power for regular driving.
