I researched for a long time before buying. The CX-5 is very highly rated by practically every reviewer and website. The particular one I settled on had fairly high mileage, but it also had every possible bell and whistle - loaded.
The engine is not particularly powerful, but is very revvy and willing. The transmission is excellently designed to get the most from the engine, both in MPG and performance.
This crossover corners very well, and is rock solid and confidence inspiring at any speed. It doesn't drive like an SUV at all! It feels and drives more like a well-sorted sports car. It also has tons of room and comfort - unlike any sports car.
It looks and drives well. Plus it has Mazda quality, reliability and gas mileage. My average is 27 mpg for mixed driving (mostly city driving with many stop signs and traffic lights). The tight turning radius is helpful in parking lots.

It's a perfect sized SUV, not too big or too small. Good looking. Great mileage.
Mazda CX-5 Overview
The Mazda CX-5 is a compact five-seat crossover SUV. The CX-5 offers plenty of space and versatility with an engine that maximizes fuel economy. For prospective used car buyers seeking a nimble crossover SUV, the Mazda CX-5 should be an attractive option.
Mazda CX-5 History
The Mazda CX-5 was introduced in 2013 and has received one update since its debut. In 2014, higher trim levels received a larger engine. The Touring and Grand Touring CX-5s use a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that boosts horsepower to be a bit more powerful. Though it was already built with a light frame, comfortable interior and spacious cabin, its base engine has not changed until its most recent refresh in 2016. Otherwise, the CX-5 received a light update to its exterior the same year.
How It Drives
The Mazda CX-5 is designed to have a light frame to enable a smaller engine, therefore the horsepower could be improved to be more competitive against other compact crossover SUVs. However, the vehicle's entertainment system, spacious cabin, and fuel economy ensure that the CX-5 is still a great vehicle to drive.
Used Mazda CX-5 Value
As a spacious, versatile, and fuel efficient vehicle, the Mazda CX-5 excels tremendously. Any driver who puts a premium on performance should look at the most recent version of the Mazda CX-5. Otherwise, changes are minimal throughout the Mazda CX-5's lifespan. As a compact crossover SUV, the Mazda CX-5 rivals the Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape.
Mazda CX-5 Standard Features
The Mazda CX-5 is equipped with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine at base. Higher trim levels have the option to swap in a 2.5L four-cylinder engine instead. Each vehicle comes with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Most CX-5 models are equipped with front-wheel drive, but any model with an automatic has the option of all-wheel drive instead.
