I LOVE this car. I've put about 20K miles on it so far, and there has not been a day when I haven't thought how glad I am to have bought it.
It's fun to drive, handles well even in bad weather, easy to park, a/c is cold, and did I mention it's cute, too. It looks small but feels bigger inside, and offers the driver a higher driving position than the Honda Fit, Mazda3, and a couple others I test drove.
The only thing I don't like is the headrests jut forward so I have to adjust the seat to compensate, and the seats aren't the most comfortable - they are adequate, though. I'm in the car over two hours a day and I can live with them!
I'm getting 38-39 mpg consistently with a manual transmission. Not phenomenal mileage, but good enough.
So far there have been NO problems or issues with this car, other than the oil filters are different from the other Scion models so you can't bop into any old oil-change place and get serviced. Hopefully, as this car becomes more popular that will change...
I think anyone looking for an reliable, inexpensive, fun commuting car should check out the Scion xD!!

My first Japanese car that I have ever bought and owned and I absolutely love it! Great design, great ride and excellent gas mileage, what more could I have asked for!

I LOVE MY 2008 SCION XD.
-good on gas
-fun to drive
-easy to manuever in tight spaces
-love the ipod hookup
-Toyota mats are not high quality. My car has 5,000 miles on it and there's already a hole in the driver mat.
-The armrest is an added cost. Consider getting one if you're going to drive long distance.
