This little vehicle has lots of power, is great on gas mileage, and handles beautifully. My colleagues have nicknamed it the Red Rocket Transformer! If you are in line for a convertible but can't justify a two seat vehicle and rear-wheel drive, this is the automobile for you. The hard-top converter allows for great cabin noise control and protection from the outside environment. One word of caution...although it's a 4 seat automobile the people that set in the back better be small because there is not much room.
I love this car. I get the best of both worlds. I have the safety of a hardtop and the open air experience of a convertible.
Just sold our silver one in the DFW area (Sep 2011). A couple of months out of mfg time with 35+K. Fun little car. Mechanics of the top worked flawlessly. Drove almost always with top down, irritating blind spot with top up. Performance wise it was a blast. Had chosen the 3.2 over the 2.0T for superior acceleration and no annoying turbo lag. Never regretted the choice. Cornered and hugged better after sticking Michelins on it. Select shift had occasional odd shift glitches until a VW recall changed something in the transmission. Paddles were akward except on straight road, easier to use the shifter. Had to replace coils twice (mfg warrantee) before a recall changed them all out. Both times were local, otherwise would have left us stuck somewhere. Fit and finnish was fair. Great in city play car, but seats get very hard very quickly on the road. We kept the windscreen in it all the time, basically turning it into a 2 seater with extra storage (that was needed for trips most of the trunk space is for the retractable roof). Too much wind in the back seats to make riding with the top down practical anyway, but great in front with only two. VW GPS system stunk in the DFW area... and very awkward to enter data. Plugged in my Garmin if I really need one. The iPod hook up was very selective about which versions it would work with at all, most with only partial functions. Most disappointing part was interior fabric pieces of headliner, inside the moon roof, and leatherette of door panels developed multiple problems that had to be repaired (again covered by VW up to the near point of sale). This was a pampered vehicle and should not have had materials giving out with normal use. This was an extra vehicle for fun in the sun. Don't think it would hold up well to full time use. Glad that we owned it... glad that we sold it before regrets. Will likely be the last VW that I purchase (both of my kids have had Jettas with similar experiences across normal aging).
