The 2023 Porsche Taycan improves range and shortens DC fast-charging times
When Porsche debuted its first SUV in 2003 and its first sedan in 2010, the Porsche faithful were up in arms that the sports car maker would dare stray out of its lane. That was, until they drove the new vehicles. It seems as though those fans also learned their lesson when Porsche rolled out its first fully electric vehicle, the Taycan, in 2020.
For 2023, the Taycan received revised software that increased range by as much as 14% and also improved DC fast-charging times. Even better, these changes were applicable to previous Taycan models. Other upgrades included a new infotainment interface, wireless phone integration, and a shuffling of standard and optional features.
There aren’t many direct rivals to the Taycan, but they’re all excellent. The related Audi e-tron GT is its most direct competitor, with the Lucid Air, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and BMW i7 offering varying degrees of performance and luxury. The Taycan distinguishes itself with some wagon-like variants and the overall greatness that comes with any Porsche, though range isn’t as generous.

What We Like
True Porsche performance: If we’ve learned anything from the Panamera and Cayenne, it’s to never doubt Porsche when it comes to performance. The Taycan is every bit a Porsche, with stunning acceleration, sports car handling, and a rare level of driver engagement among EVs. It just happens to be all-electric and much quieter than Porsche’s vehicles with internal combustion engines.
High DC fast-charging rates: The Taycan is capable of charging at a 270-kW DC fast-charging rate, making it one of the quickest in the industry. Porsche estimates you can get from a 5% state of charge to 80% in only 22 minutes. Of course, that means you’ll have to find a charger capable of that rate.
Excellent build quality: Porsches are notoriously expensive, but the company justifies the cost with an interior that is almost beyond reproach. Materials quality is excellent throughout the cabin, with premium leather and sporty Alcantara synthetic suede gracing almost every surface. Underneath is a sturdy and well-constructed structure that is devoid of any creaks or squeaks when you're driving over rough pavement.
What Needs Improvement
Limited rear passenger space: Average-size adults will fit in the rear seats, but the space isn't as generous as in other luxury sedans. There isn't much room for your feet under the sedan’s front seats, making the space feel smaller, and you’ll have to duck your head when getting in or out to avoid the low roof. The Taycan Cross Turismo, with almost two more inches of rear headroom, is a better choice if you regularly shuttle passengers.
