The subcompact Taos is the smallest SUV available from Volkswagen. Introduced for the 2022 model year, the Taos joins a growing and popular group of subcompact SUVs designed to appeal to young, active urbanites who want flexible cargo space as well as easy parking.

Models with all-wheel drive feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic through 2024, but switched to the eight-speed automatic starting in 2025.

2022 - 2025

First generation Volkswagen Taos

The Volkswagen Taos is a subcompact SUV that offers better performance than comparable small SUVs. Its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine powers an automatic transmission with front-wheel drive or a dual-clutch transmission with all-wheel drive in most years. For 2025, VW equipped all Taos models with the standard (non-dual-clutch) automatic for smoother shifting.

Inside, the Taos is fully modern with a tech-forward cabin. Advanced driver-assistance features such as blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and automatic emergency braking are all standard equipment on later model years. The seats are sporty and supportive, and the Taos offers up to 65.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second-row seat folded down. That’s competitive with many larger compact SUVs.

Overall, the Taos is a great choice for people who are looking for a capable and versatile SUV that is still easy to maneuver and park in tight urban environments.
