Fifth Generation (2008-2015):

Debuting in 2008, the fifth-generation BMW 7 Series stands out thanks to its series of fast-paced changes. By 2015, the fifth-gen 7 Series would feature all-wheel drive in the form of the 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive models, along with the eight-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission and an all-turbocharged engine lineup.

Engine options for 2015 include the 4.4L TwinPower Turbo eight-cylinder engine with 445 horsepower and the 536 horsepower 6.0L TwinPower Turbo V12 engine, available exclusively on the 760Li. The 3.0L TwinScroll Turbo inline-six-cylinder, available on the 740i, 740Li and 740Li xDrive, is also shared with the efficiency-oriented ActiveHybrid 7.

Other notable features found on the fifth generation of the 7 Series include:

  • Self-leveling air suspension
  • Four-zone automatic air conditioning
  • Rear-seat entertainment
  • Collision Avoidance System
  • Enhanced Active Cruise Control

BMW unveiled the sixth-generation 7 Series in late 2015, once again giving buyers a broad range of engine options and features. The ActiveHybrid 7 was discontinued in favor of the 740e iPerformance plug-in hybrid.

The 760Li was also replaced with the M760Li xDrive in 2016, ushering in all-wheel drive for the flagship 7 Series model. The M760Li xDrive features a 6.6L twin-turbocharged variant of the BMW V12 engine, generating 602 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.
