About The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

Vehicle Summary

The Chevrolet Colorado is a great midsize truck for your off-road adventures. Since its debut in late 2017, the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 has distinguished itself as the type of versatile, go-anywhere truck that you'll love if you're an off-road enthusiast; this truck is simply built for what's beyond the beaten path.

Regardless of the model year, you can count on a raised suspension, wide track, fender flares, and beefy off-road tires. It's all meant to convey ruggedness and off-road ability — along with the right approach and departure angles.

Design-wise, the Colorado ZR2 gives a lean and clean look that fits in wherever you may roam, from work to the outer trail. And while off-road is its specialty, it handles pavement just fine as well, delivering capable performance from a selection of powertrains. Those engines range from the 3.6L V6 (standard on 2018 and 2019 models) and the available 2.8L turbodiesel four-cylinder engine (optional on 2018 and 2019 models). The V6 comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel comes with a six-speed auto.

Overall, the Colorado ZR2 is an exceptional off-roader with mild manners and a comfortable interior. The fact that both the V6 or the diesel engine -- across all years from 2017 — tow up to an estimated 5,000 lbs, when properly equipped, is an added bonus for a performance vehicle like the ZR2.1

FAQ

Q: What engine size is in the Chevy Colorado ZR2?

A: A standard 3.6L V6 engine or an optional 2.8L turbo diesel powers the 2019 Colorado ZR2. The 2018 model will give you a 2.5L inline four-cylinder engine as its base option, rated at 200 hp. The V6 offers an ample 308 hp, while the diesel option puts out 186 hp alongside an impressive 369 lb.-ft. of torque.

Q: Is the Chevy Colorado ZR2 a Diesel?

A: Yes — if a diesel engine is what you want to go with. For example, the 2018 ZR2 with the available 2.8L turbodiesel offers up plenty of twist and power to go with an EPA-estimated highway gas mileage of 22 mpg.2 The EPA also estimated the V6 powertrain at 24 mpg on the highway, across all model years.2  Of course, your mileage will vary depending on how many hills you climb and streams you cross with your Colorado ZR2.

Q: Can the Chevy Colorado ZR2 pull a camper?

A: Yes, but it depends on the size. All model years have an estimated towing capacity of up to 5,000 lbs, when properly equipped — and that's with either the diesel engine or the V6.1

1 Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories.

2 Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates when vehicles sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov for details.

2017- 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Configurations

The ZR2 is the hearty off-road leader of the Colorado pack that comes standard with a 3.6L V6 engine and an available 2.8L turbodiesel, across all years. Differences between a regular Colorado and the ZR2 performance truck are plentiful; Chevrolet started by widening the rear track by 3.5 inches and lifting the suspension two inches higher. All ZR2 trucks are also fitted with 17-inch wheels and 31-inch off-road tires.

According to Chevrolet, the ZR2 (all model years) has more off-road tech than any other truck in its class. That includes front and rear electronic locking differentials, Multimatic® Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSV®) damper technology, cast iron control arms, rock sliders, and modified front and rear bumpers (for clearance). It also features an integrated trailer brake control component.

Also unique to the 2017 onwards ZR2 is an aluminum skid plate protecting the radiator and engine oil pan. Design changes that came in with the 2017 model include a new grille and hood to differentiate it from the rest of the Colorado lineup. On the inside, that distinction is further accomplished with unique ZR2 leather material throughout the cabin.

Fun truck to own

It is a good size truck even though it is clearly smaller than "1500" size trucks. I have found it to be a great compromise between size and ease of use. Since I live in a pretty dense urban area so it provides a lot of functionality without being difficult to maneuver around town.
