2008 Dodge DurangoKen - Northern New Mexico03/31/2009
Was looking for a 4WD/AWD SUV to replace a 2WD Trailblazer. The TB was great, with a fantastic engine and excellent ride, but I really needed the 4WD to deal with snowy roads.
Durango fit the bill perfectly. Although it's classed as a full size SUV and has third row seating, it's only a few inches longer than a Trailblazer and fits comfortably in a residential garage.
Came with a 4.7 liter V8 capable of running gas or E85, larger than the 4.0 straight six in a TB but only 1 mpg less mileage (19 vs 20 highway).
Very nice interior and only a few disappointments: I added factory running boards which was probably a mistake. They look great, which is why I installed them, but aren't positioned to be very helpful getting in (too high) and if you step over them getting out you get your pant legs dirty.
My model has the standard AWD transfer case that can't be locked into low. Haven't tried it on ice or snow yet, so I'm not sure how much of a problem that will be. That also means no 2 Hi option either - it's always in 4WD.
Finally, the drive train is a bit noisy, especially going around corners. Not sure if that's how it's designed or something that needs to be fixed under warranty.
Vehicles with third-row seating have plenty of features for nearly every type of driver. For families that need a great family-friendly vehicle, SUVs, crossovers, and minivans with third-row seats give passengers roomy interiors and still have enough power to haul plenty of vacation equipment or moving supplies.
