About the Toyota Prius-Prime Hybrid

Vehicle Summary

Debuting in 2017 as part of the Toyota Prius' fourth generation (2016-2020), the Toyota Prius Prime offers the hybrid functionality of the traditional Prius with an added bonus: a lithium-ion battery pack that allows the vehicle to run purely on electric power until the battery is depleted. From there, the Prius Prime switches seamlessly back to drawing power from its hybrid engine.

If you're shopping for a plug-in hybrid, be sure to check out the Toyota Prius Prime for yourself. This innovative car offers seating for four passengers—though beginning with the 2020 model, Toyota has added a standard bench seat to the second row to extend seating capacity to five. Meanwhile, the Prius Prime offers some generous features inside and out, including heated front seats, a seven-inch touchscreen display, and Toyota's suite of driver-assistance features on the 2018 model.

Reviews for Toyota Prius Prime Hybrid

Overall Rating

4.8 out of 5 (12 reviews)

Excellent Car. Awesome Mileage.

Bought this brand new from Carmax Laurel Toyota back in July and have zero complaints. It’s a great commuter car, comfortable with awesome features that come in handy. The automatic braking and collision warning have saved me a few times on the turnpikes! Plus the best part is that I am averaging over 118mpg for a 300+ mile commute every week! I only fill up the tank 1 time a month if that. Excellent car, I would recommend to anyone who wants something comfortable, reliable and I think, stylish.

Pros

  • Fuel Economy:
  • Reliability:
  • Technology and Entertainment:

Toyota Prius Prime--A great car.

I purchased my Prius Prime on August 19 with 7480 miles on it. As of today, December 16, I have 10,731. The Prime has far exceeded expectations. It is comfortable, quiet, and enjoyable to drive while being even more efficient than EPA predictions led me to believe. On the 1100 mile round-trip to visit my daughter in Indiana in early September we used only hybrid mode—no external charging—and still averaged 66 miles per gallon for the trip (16.626 gallons of gas to cover 1100 miles). Further, I have been able to do virtually all local driving in pure electric mode where I am averaging slightly over five miles per kWh. (Haven’t added gas to the tank since the last fill on return from Indiana in early September and the gas gage still reads 9-tents full as I write this.) Over the last 30 days I have driven 504 EV only miles on 94.46 kWh of electricity in the hills around Asheville, NC. The Prime is really an outstanding vehicle.

Pros

  • Fuel Economy: See notes above. A VERY green vehicle from a polution standpoint. Zero in electric mode and, per EPA, 78 grams per mile in hybrid mode versus the 287 grams claimed by EPA for my 2009 Fit in spite of its "ultra low emmission vehicle" rating.
  • Cabin Noise: Much quieter than my previous owned Honda Fit it replaced.
  • Ride and Handling: Easy and comfortable to drive. Feels solid.

Cons

  • Interior Space: Totally adequate for two people, with baggage, and the rear seat down but suspect there would be a shortage of baggage space for a family with children. This is not an issue for me but might be for others.

Pros

  • Fuel Economy: 49.2 mpg overall - 25 miles per charge no gas required.
  • Styling: draws many compliments on style.
  • Technology and Entertainment: very high tech and i love it!

Cons

  • Interior Space: only 2 seats in back but i knew that going in.
